Hannah Robison of  Charlotte Girls golf.
She is a junior and this is her third year on varsity. As a sophomore she broke the school record for 18 holes (75) and 9 holes (36) and was our top golfer in our league and received honorable mention all-state.
She is a one sport athlete who plays golf all year.
She is undecided on a college but wants to play golf at the next level.
In our first three  invites this year she has finished seventh, second and first. In the East Jackson Invite she finished 7th at Calderone Golf Course.  At the Parma Western Invite she tied for first in regulation with a 75 and lost in a 4 hole playoff to finish second.
On Friday, she got first place at the Mason Invite with a 70 which won the invite and set a new school record.  There were 15 teams and 90 golfers at this invite.

  1. 4. 4.) What expectations do you have of your team this season?

Boys: getting back on top of the podium at state finals for the 3rd straight year

Girls: sending the whole team to state finals

As a whole, just being one big happy family.

  1. 5. 5.) What will be your team’s strength?

Having depth on the boy’s side will be key.

On the girls side adding 3 freshman will give us a better shot to make state finals as a team.

  1. 6. 6.) What are some things this team needs to work on?

Growing as a whole and getting better each and every day.

  1. 6. 7.) Your conference: How strong is it and who would you consider the league favorites? Where do you see your team fitting into the league race?

Boys: it will be another year of going back and forth with Carson City. Both of our teams are very similar in strength and will be fun to see all 3 races unfold.

Girls: Mt Pleasant Sacred Heart will again be the favorites.

  1. 7. 8.)  How has it been to have a preseason like this with the lessening of COVID restrictions?

Preseason has been much better without covid related things going on. The athletes seem to have a better sense of well-being and are having fun again.

9.) Any other comments?

Just a heavy heart with one of our guys being gone, but we seem to be doing better each and every day. It has been a heartwarming feeling with the amount of support we have been given from other schools in the state and we want to say a huge thank you for that. The cross country family that is our great state is forever thankful for all support.

C5 Girls Team

Number of years as head coach of current team:  Starting 10th year

Team’s conference record last year: 3rd in MSAC, 5th at Regionals

Key players lost from last year (name and position):  Molly Dailey, 4x state qualifier

How many starters from last year are returning? 6

How many seniors? 3, Emily Delong, Paige Ewalt, Lyvia Halfman

Name any freshmen/sophomores (and positions) who are moved up to varsity this year: 0

Captains (name and positions): Emily Delong, Lyvia Halfman

Key players this year and why:  Mary Beth Hyatt, Paige Ewalt, Emily Delong, and Paige Fleisher.  Their experience at the varsity level will be key in how far the team goes this year.

What will be the most challenging obstacle for your team this year?:  To find someone to fill the shoes of Molly Dailey not only as a scorer, but as a leader.

Coach’s quote on outlook for upcoming season (please keep it to 3-4 sentences): The girls were very close to making it as a team last year (missed it by 17 points) and I believe that they can contend for the MSAC and get back to Brooklyn.  After making it to State the previous 4 years as a team, they didn’t like it much that they narrowly missed going and had to stay at home & watch Molly from the livestream.  That hunger will determine if they make the return trip.

Name of assistant coaches: Kyle Coblentz, Steve Lacy

Themed games and dates (homecoming, pink-out, etc): Pink week is usually the end of October

C5 Boys team

Number of years as head coach of current team:  starting 10th

Team’s overall record last year: State Champions in Division 4

How many starters from last year are returning? 4

How many seniors? 5

Captains (name and positions):  Ashton Keiffer, Cavanaugh Barker

Key players this year and why: Ashton Keiffer, Cole Stone, Brayden Clark, Deegan Bodell, Gavin Gage, Matt Emelander.

Ashton, Cole, and Brayden are the key returners from the state championship team. Keiffer will work with Stone and Brayden Clark to fill the void left by Coleman Clark while Junior Deegan Bodell, Seniors Gavin Gage and all state track man Matt Emelander will provide some spark and depth to help fill the shoes of Jared Shepler and Calvin Clark.

What will be the most challenging obstacle for your team this year?: filling the void left by Coleman, Jared and Calvin.

Coach’s quote on outlook for upcoming season (please keep it to 3-4 sentences): You cannot “replace” a Coleman Clark.  His on the field leadership and ability to win races was huge.  The goal is to do everything we can to repeat the feats of 2020.  We are definitely a different team, but I believe we can be just as strong as the 2020 team and achieve the same success.

Name of assistant coaches: Kyle Coblentz, Steve Lacy, Jake Hanes

Please answer extensively

  1. 1. Your 2020 record and highlights— and thoughts.
    1. Lost our coach of 5 years abruptly when he moved to a new job in FL—so I have no records of last season.

    1. 2. Name some key athletes that have graduated and your remembrances on their contributions to the program.

Same answer-Except Cade Clone and Cam Salas graduated in 2020 and were both 1st team all area. I did assist girls last year, and headed JV—so I can share that in the spring…

    1. 3. Please mention several athletes who will be key performers…name, year in school, position. Your expectations from each of these athletes this season. (Feel free to attach a roster if one is available).
    2. Junior Luke Snyder is a returning keeper, and has the potential to really support the D line. Junior Dylan Hulliberger was honorable mention all area last season-and will hold the 6 (defensive mid) with fellow juniors Brayden Thomas, one of our best ball handlers (playing at the 10-Attacking mid and Captain) and Adam Myers playing at the 8 (center mid). Senior Addison Goff returned after a 2 year break at the 4 position (center back)  to help Junior Alex George hold center D (Captain at the 5) with junior Aaron Willoughby (Captain) playing right back ( at the 2), and Freshmen Mitchell George stepping up to play the 3 (left back and bro of center back Alex). Senior newcomer Miguel Fajardo completes our offense at the 9 (striker) to give us depth. We have a decent bench, and boys who have the stamina to run the winger spots.

    1. 4. What expectations do you have of your team this season?
    2. For the first time in 11 years we’ve fielded a JV team—the best players on that team will double roster to play for Varsity in most games too—to build their skills. We have a team of 6 seasoned coaches working together at every practice and game to support the growth in the program, and to retain talent for next year.
    3. Our first 2 varsity games allowed us to have a 2-0 shutout against Owosso, and a 4-0 shutout against Corunna, building confidence. We just need to learn to play better possession ball against quicker teams. And learn to trust each other to coordinate plays.

    1. 5. What will be your team’s strength? Strong D and excellent mid field possession/passing to lead the offense to shot opportunities. We have 5 groups of brothers on the team-so our bonds are pretty strong.

    1. 6. What are some things this team needs to work on? Communication and trust—so we don’t have 2 players covering the same spot on the field, and so wingers crash the net for EVERY run or shot.

    1. 6. Your conference: How strong is it and who would you consider the league favorites? Where do you see your team fitting into the league race?
    2. We will compete well in our Conference-once we have a few contests under our belt. Lansing Christian and Lakewood will be our toughest competition—we can match them—if we settle down and play strong, patient D and possession ball.

    1. 7. How has it been to have a preseason like this with the lessening of COVID restrictions?

We started with 2 a days for an entire tryout week, in the heat, to get a solid start on building their stamina and camaraderie.

    1. 8. Any other comments? We have strong, patient, skilled leaders that will bring this team together. And coaching staff that works VERY well together-so every player can find one coach that speaks their soccer language. Asst. Varsity Jeremie Wilson, Head JV Jackson Wilson, Asst JV coaches Mike Salas and Chase Rodriquez and Keeper coach Brad Kramer.

The Eagle Cross Country teams competed today at the Birch Run Early Invitational.
The girls finished 9th in the Small school division and 19th out of 27 schools over all (large & small school divisions combined)

The boys opened the season in defense of their 2020 D4 championship finishing 3rd overall (large & small school divisions combined) and 2nd in the small school division (Ithaca won the small school division).  Leading the way for the Eagles was Ashton Keiffer, followed by Brayden Clark, Deegan Bodell, Cole Stone, Gavin Gage, Jacob Stevens and Oisin O’Grady (All of which earned a medal).
Coach Grant Woodman: “It was really good to get back out there and test the training that we have been doing.  The heat & humidity was brutal, but it usually is in late August.  To finish in the top 3 overall out of 27 schools and be the top Division 4 school is  huge.  This is a great start for both teams.  We talked about finding the positives for both teams and how we are different teams from a year ago– but we can accomplish the similar things. The girls finishing in the top 10 with only 5 girls was a great confidence booster and the boys finishing 3rd to a D2 and D3 school is also a great start.  This is the starting line, the finish line is in November and we will continue to work to get better every race.  “
The next race for the Eagles will be September 2nd at the Ithaca Yellowjacket invitational.

Coach Terry Schwartzkopf: “Essentially, I think the finish is a good representation of where we are.  We are still not full strength as we are waiting on Joaco to heal and we have seven players whom are still learning the program and getting used to varsity.  Ann Arbor Greenhills and Cranbrook are perennial powers and they showed that today.  However, in many of those matches we played them very close and even took a few from them.  Of the 11 losses suffered today as a team…8 were from those two schools.  Our position on the day is a direct result of the draws as we were 4-1 in direct matches against the team who placed third above us. We learned a lot about where we are and what to work on.  Special call out to Austin King who battled all day long and played three players who were all seeded in last years state tournament, losing to the 1 seed, to the 4th seed 10-8 in the third, and beating the 8th seed.  Also, congrats to our four doubles team of Michael McGaugh and Jonathan Song for winning their flight and Logan Yu for pulling out what most considered the biggest upset of the tournament with his win over Greenhills.  Extremely proud of this team.
