Portland St. Patrick’s girls softball started conference play tonight, on the road at Pewamo-Westphalia.
The first game of the night was a battle of the bats as the lead changed throughout the night. Unfortunately with 14 hits, the Shamrocks still came up short and lost 17-13.
Leading was 8th grader Gracelyn Rockey with four hits, three runs and two RBIs, Natalee Teachworth had two hits, including a double and an RBI, Mattie Honsowitz had two hits and two RBIs, Hayley Fleischer had two hits, Emma Honsowitz had two RBIs and a double, Tori Sandborn had two RBIs, Hannah Weller had one RBI and Rylee Scheurer had two stolen bases.
Unfortunately in the field the Shamrocks had 7 errors for the night. Natalee Teachworth took the loss for St. Patrick, pitching 5 ⅓ innings, while striking out five and only walking one.
Game two was a completely different game altogether. St. Patrick’s ended up winning the game 4-3 with a walk off base hit from senior Natalee Teachworth.
St. Patrick collected nine hits on the night. Rylee Scheurer led the Shamrocks with two hits with a triple, an RBI, and two stolen bases. Natalee Teachworth had two hits and the game winning RBI, Mattie Honsowitz had two hits, Gracelyn Rockey had a hit with an RBI, and Addie Scheurer had a hit, an RBI and two stolen bases.
St. Patrick turned around the defense and didn’t commit a single error in the field this game. In addition, catcher Addie Scheruer caught two girls stealing at second base. Freshman Mattie Honsowitz was the winning pitcher and also completed her first full game on Varsity, allowing only eight hits and three runs, striking out four.
Next week, the Shamrocks take on Fulton in a doubleheader on Monday at home starting at 4PM.
