Freeland’s girls basketball team got off to a quick start and held back Alma Tuesday night in a 61-49 victory. Freeland was up 13-9 after the first quarter, 27-16 at halftime and 45-30 after the third quarter.  Freeland is 3-1.

 

Breanna Short scored 19 points and had seven shot blocks for Freeland while Taryn Taugher had 18 points and four assists, Sofia Guterrez had 10 points and Hannah Foy scored nine points and added four assists. For rebounds, Short had 10, Taugher eight and Foy four.

Maddy Seeley followed with 16 points while Kendall Vedrode had nine points and Lexi Morton four points. Alma fell to 2-3.

Clare improved its record to 5-1 with a 75-17 victory over Harrison on Thursday night in girls basketball action. Clare was up 25-4 after the first quarter, 49-6 at halftime and 63-13 after the third quarter. It was 9-4, Clare, in the fourth quarter.

 

Lindsay Winter led the Pioneers with 25 points, 10 steals and four assists. Mackenzie Phayer added 12 points, Corrine Wezensky contributed 10 points and five rebounds, Morgan English added eight point and Alex Stark had five points, seven steals and five rebounds.

 

Ithaca’s girls basketball team lost 53-48 Thursday at Ithaca in girls basketball action to Saginaw Valley Lutheran. Ithaca fell to 1-5 while Valley Lutheran is 1-4. Lacie Mates led Ithaca with 10 points and 12 rebounds while Mikayla Borrows contributed nine points and two steals, Liz Bentley had nine points, two steals and eight rebounds and Kyle Hafin had six points, 10 rebounds, four assists and one steal.

 

St. Louis entered Tuesday’s game with Ithaca at 2-1 but fell to 2-2 with a 53-20 loss to the Yellowjackets. For St. Louis, Dakota Latoski scored six points, followed by Zach Mizer with five, Collin Shaw with four and Noel Bailey and Eddie Jackson with three apiece. Ithaca was up 10-2 after the first quarter, 23-10 at halftime and 39-19 after the third quarter. Ithaca had a 15-8 scoring advantage in the final quarter.

 

Ithaca improved to 3-0 on Tuesday with  a 53-20 boys basketball victory over St. Louis. Ithaca was up 10-2 after the first quarter, 23-10 at halfitme and 39-19 after the third quarter. Ithaca had a 15-8 scoring advantage in the final quarter. Josh Hafner scored 12 points to lead Ithaca, followed by Logan Hessbrook with 11, Travis Smith with 10 and Eli Villalobos with eight.

 

Crossroads boys basketball team celebrated a 51-36 victory over Onekama on Tuesday night. Crossroads, 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the league, was up 15-4 after the first quarter, 27-20 at halftime and 44-23 after the third quarter. Aron Garland led the Cougars with 22 points with five field goals, two 3-pointers and six free throws. Justin Thorne scored nine points for the winners.

Chippewa Hills wrestling team opened its season with wins of 69-9 over Holton and 53-18 over Lakeview.

Helping the Warriors with pins were Zak King at 119 pounds, and Slade Todd at 135 pounds.

King has an 8-0 record. In the win over Lakeview, Chippewa Hills prospered on pins by Mike Felix at 130, John Wixon at 140, Kevin Briscoe at 152, Eric Russell at 189 and Brendan Berry at 215.

 

King and Wixon both have 8-0 records.

Big Rapids Crossroads girls basketball team is now 4-0 in the West Michigan D League after Wednesday’s 71-45 victory against Brethren. Crossroads led 38-17 at halftime and outscored Brethren 33-28 in the second half. Crossroads s 5-1 overall

 

Malory Carlson scored 17 points, 15 rebounds and three steals for the Cougars while Miranda Carlson had 16 points, 11 boards and three assist. Keala Brooks aded 13 points, five assists and three steals. Megan Soller and Hanna Mead netted eight points apiece.

Morley Stanwood juniors Kayla Rosman and Mekayla Carey have been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s (AVCA) High School Phenom List following the recently completed season.

This honor will allow them to participate in the AVCA Phenom College Prep Program, which is an invite-only for players on the phenom list not currently signed with a college.

 

Rosman and Carey are two of 24 athletes from this state among the more than 200 athletes invited to the event.
