Lansing Eastern was eighth among nine teams at Saturday’s Ionia Wrestling Invitational.

Carson City-Crystal won the event with 349 points, followed by Livonia Stevenson with 272, Jackson Lumen Christi with 244, Hudsonville Unity Christian with 202, Portland with 195, Ionia with 194, Delton Kellogg with 184, Lansing Eastern with 154.4 and Grand Rapids Forest Hills Eastern with 100.

 

Jeff Mills of Eastern won the 215-pound class with a 5-4 win in the finals over Brad Osterman. Eastern’s Jerek Crim lost 6-5 in the title match for 171 pounds to Connor Vaughan of Livonia Stevenson.

Ionia posted 184 points to place sixth out of nine teams at its home invitational on Saturday.

Ionia’s Cameron Malitch at 103 pounds defeated Spencer Good of Jackson Lumen Christi 1-0.

Portland posted 195 points Saturday to take fifth place out of nine teams at the Ionia Invitational. Derek Gardner had Portland’s best day as an individual wrestler. He was second at  152 pounds. He was pinned in the championship match by Dillon Decker.

Dallas O’Green got a pin in 1:24 in the finals over Javin Potts of Jackson Lumen Christi. Taylor Barkley at 119 and Brad Osterman  at 285 lost their title matches for CC-C to take second.

 

Also winning their divisions for the Eagles were Garner Cusack at 140, Dillon Decker at 152 and Darren Decker at 160. Brad Osterman lost at 215 pounds in the finals.

 

Lakewood’s girls basketball team fell to Perry 36-26 in non-league action on Friday. Lakewood (0-5) was down 28-13 after the first three quarters. Taylor VantLand had eight points for Lakewood including six in the fourth quarter. Karly Morris score five points for Lakewood.

Colin O’Mara scored 22 points to lead Lakewood to a 81-65 non-league win at home on Friday against Perry.

 

Lakewood led 22-14 after the first quarter and 44-32 at halftime. Alex Caudy had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Lakewood (2-2) and Kaleb Makley collected 13 points and 10 boards.

Corunna finished second in its home tournament with a 4-1 record on Friday. New Lothrop was 5-0, Corunna 4-1, Hastings 3-2, Alma 2-3, Dearborn Heights Crestwood 2-3, Ithaca 2-3, Swartz Creek 2-3 and Flint Powers Catholic 0-5.

Emilio Campos, Dylan Cannon and Tristan Serbus were 5-0 for Corunna while Tyler Butcher, Cody Conklin and Dylan Wibert were 4-1.

 

New Lothrop won the title match over Corunna 51-21.

New Lothrop made the long trip to Marquette on Dec. 21 and came back as champions of the 20-team wrestling tournament.

New Lothrop scored 246 points compared to 204 for Merrill (Wisc.), 155 for Grandville 145.5 for Gaylord and 128.5 for Mason.

 

Cole Hersch led New Lothrop with a fourth place at 119 pounds, beating Jon Martin of Gaylord 15-2. Connor Krupp was second at 103 pounds after getting pinned in 4:59 by Dom Lajoie of Gaylord. Also taking firsts for New Lothrop were Aaron Bauman at 152, John Wendling at 160, Taylor Krupp at 171 and Cody Symons at 189. Gabe Bennett took a second for NL at 135 pounds after being pinned in 5:21 by Collin Tomkins of Grandville. Owen Wilson was second at 215 pounds.

Big Rapids struggled in a home game Friday night 8-1 to Kenowa Hills

Brendan Bomay score a goal for Big Rapids, assisted by Ethan Hepler and Michael Green, that cut the Kenowa Hills lead to 2-1 after one period. But it was Kenowa Hills the rest of the way with goalie Andrew DeYoung shutting down the Cardinals.

 

Big Rapids fell to 2-8.

Saginaw Heritage opened action on Friday in the Traverse City Tournament with a 3-2 overtime win over the Traverse City Bay Reps. Saginaw Heritage scored twice in the first period and also in the overtime. Traverse City Bay Reps scored once in the first period and once in the second. 

Hunter Parasiliti, Gavin Dietrich and Tommy Munoz had one goal apiece. Jason Federico, Devan Bayne, Tyler Angers and Jacob Swartz had one assist apiece. Kevin Cressey recorded 27 saves for the winners.
