Detroit Consortium Prep prevails

As a blizzard raged outside, the action inside heated up quickly Saturday at the Muskegon Basketball Showcase three-game tournament at Redmond-Potter Gymnasium on the campus of Muskegon High School.

Detroit Consortium Prep looked worthy of its preseason hype in an impressive 70-35 victory over defending Michigan Class A semifinalist Grand Rapids Christian in the day’s opening game.

Josh Jackson, a 6-7 wingman who is rated the No. 2 sophomore player in the country, scored a game-high 18 points, including three dunks, to lead the Cougars. Fellow sophomore Luster Johnson scored 12 points, serving notice that Consortium should be strong for several years to come.

Deleon Brown led GR Christian with 16 points.

The 5 p.m. game is a showdown between two of the nation’s best senior guards – Xavier recruit Edmond Sumner of Detroit Country Day against Kentucky-bound Tyler Ulis of Marian Catholic (Chicago Heights, Ill.)

The final game of the day will feature an inside showdown between Chicago Curie 6-9 senior Cliff Alexander, the No. 4-ranked senior player in the country who has committed to Kansas, against Muskegon High 6-9 junior Deyonta Davis, who recently committed to Michigan State.

Michigan State prospect will be showcased in special Muskegon event

Muskegon’s Deyonta Davis, a 6-9 junior who verbally committed to Michigan State, put on a show at last week’s Hall of Fame Classic tournament, but can he do the same against one of the top players in the nation?

 

Davis vs. Kansas-bound Cliff Alexander of Chicago Curie in the finale is just one of many compelling storylines going into Saturday’s three-game Muskegon Classic basketball tournament at historic Redmond-Potter Gymnasium on the campus of Muskegon High School.

 

In the opener, Detroit Consortium’s 6-7 Josh Jackson, rated the No. 2 sophomore player in the country, goes up against Coach Steve Majerle and Grand Rapids Christian, a Class A semifinalist last season. The middle game is a showdown between two of the nation’s best senior guards – Xavier recruit Edmond Sumner of Detroit Country Day against Kentucky-bound Tyler Ulis of Marian Catholic (Ill).

 

All tickets for the day-long event are $10 and no passes of any kind will be accepted.

Rockford hockey team gets fifth win

 

Rockford’s hockey team improved to 5-3-1 on Saturday with a 4-3 road win over East Grand Rapids. It was 1-1 after the first period, but Rockford fell behind 3-2 after the second period. Rockford outscored East GR 2-0 in the third period. Noah Brayton had two goals and one assist for Rockford while David Sokol had one goal and three assists followed by Trevor Mills with one goal and one assist. Goalie Sam Price had 18 saves while Matt Hills had three saves.

Rockford girls basketball team at 3-2

Rockford’s girls basketball team has entered the holiday break at 3-2 following a 44-26 win Dec. 21 at the Cornerstone University Invitational over Forest Hills Northern. Rockford had quarter leads of 10-7, 20-16 and 34-24 and outscored FHN 10-2 in the final quarter.

 

Logan McCamne scored 18 points to lead Rockford while hitting four 3-pointers. Megan Datema netted 13 points and 10 boards and Brianna Young had six points.

Rockford boys basketball team defeats Zeeland West

Rockford defeated Zeeland West 82-76 on Saturday in the consolation game of the Cornerstone University tournament. Rockford is 3-3.

The Rams had lost a tourney semifinal game on Friday 55-44 to Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern. The Rams trailed 17-8 after the first quarter and 24-22 at halftime. But they led 35-34 after the third quarter. FHN outscored Rockford 21-9 in the fourth.

 

For Rockford, Nathan Woznick scored 11 points, which included two 3-pointers. Casey Watters had a 3-pointer and 10 points. Chris Sunday netted nine points and Josh Olson put in six points.

Grand Ledge girls defeat Grandville

 

Codie Drake netted 16 points while Hannah Orwat scored 15 points including a 3-pointer on Dec. 21 to lead Grand Ledge over Grandville in girls basketball action. Sophia Guzman added six points while Lauren Bachert had five points and four assists. Cori Crocket had nine rebounds. Grand Ledge was up 15-12 after the first quarter, 29-20 at halftime and 37-32 after the third quarter. It was 16-5 in Grand Ledge’s favor in the fourth.

Grand Ledge girls at 2-2

 

Grand Ledge’s girls basketball team entered the holiday break at 2-2 following a 57-47 loss to the Detroit Martin Luther King girls on Monday. Grand Ledge was up 13-12 after the first quarter but trailed 30-18 after the second quarter and 51-32 at halftime. Grand Ledge had a 15-6 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter. Cori Crocker had six rebounds for Grand Ledge and also scored 13 points. Lindsay Orwat netted 15 points and Hannah Orwat had nine points for Grand Ledge.

Charlotte basketball team enjoys 3-0 record

 

Charlotte is 3-0 after having defeated Parma Western 62-53 on Dec. 13 at home. Charlotte was up 15-11 after the first quarter, 29-28 at halftime and 41-40 after the third period. Charlotte had a 21-13 scoring advantage in the final eight minutes. Charlotte was able to offset the 29-point effort from Isaiah Ingles who also had four assists. Ryan Peterson scored 13 points for Charlotte.

St. Louis girls enjoy 5-0 basketball record

 

St. Louis entered the holiday break with a 5-0 record thanks to a 50-32 win over Carrollton on Dec. 19. St. Louis was up 9-7 after the first quarter, 20-13 at halftime and 41-23 after the third quarter. St. Louis had a 21-10 scoring advantage in the third period. It was 9-9 in the fourth. Bri Alspaugh scored nine points and had 10 rebounds for St. Louis. Taylor Smith netted 13 points for St. Louis while Amanda Corder added nine. Michaela Austin scored seven points, Ryan Fagins had six points and Brogan Holmes put in five points. Anna Vaiz had 15 points for Carrollton.

Carrollton girls basketball team falls

 

Carrollton’s girls basketball team has been having a good season but fell 43-22 to Gladwin on Dec. 27. Gladwin was up 14-4 after the first period, 22-11 after the second quarter and 36-19 after the third. Carrollton was outscored 7-3 in the final quarter. Breana Speight scored six points while Bailey O’Neil netted five points and Anna Vaiz and Jalyn Saxton netted four apiece.
