Several area Class A teams are ranked in the Associated Press’ Michigan girls basketball poll this week.

 

In Class A, ranked schools are Dewitt 8-0, at No 5, Midland 7-0 at No. 6, Holt 8-0 at No. 8 and Grand Ledge, 3-2 at No. 10. Honorable mention teams include Midland Dow at 5-1, Haslett at 5-1 and Saginaw Heritage at 3-2.

Cedar Springs improved to 4-0 with a 68-57 win over Belding in boys basketball action Friday. Belding was up 13-11 after the first quarter but Cedar Springs led 27-13 at halftime. The Red Hawks had a 24-8 scoring advantage in the third. Belding had a 26-17 scoring advantage in the fourth but it wasn’t enough to overtake Cedar Springs. Cam Link led Cedar Springs with 23 points, followed by Dakota Bekins with 17 points and Brad Brechting with eight points.

 

 

 

Eaton Rapids boys basketball team improved to 4-2 with a 56-53 victory over Parma Western on Dec. 20. Eaton Rapids was tied with Parma 16-16 after the first quarter but had a 27-23 lead after the third quarter and held off a 17-16 Parma scoring advantage in the final eight minutes. Jared McDaniels led Eaton Rapids with 23 points.

Belding lost 43-21 to Sparta in dual wrestling action on Wednesday.

Max Walker got a decision for Belding, 10-9 at 103 pounds. Nate Cooley won 7-2 over Alex Parris at 125. Josh Smith took a 5-2 decision at 152 over Nick Hanson.

 

Neil McCully pinned Marc Behrens in 1:30 at 189 pounds and Blake Rodarmer won by forfeit at 215.

Lakeview defeated Reed City and Newaygo in CSAA wrestling action Wednesday.

Reed City was up 33-26 after the heavyweight class. But the Coyotes voided at 103 and 112 and Lakeview won 38-33.

In the Lakeview match Austin Davy at 119 pounds opened the action against Reed City’s Abe Angious with a 15-0 technical fall victory and 5-0 lead.

Jess Gourney won at 125 over RC9-1.

Riley Reynard at 130 upped Lakeview’s lead to 13-0 with a 10-2 major decision over Brendon Marsh.

 

RC got two pins but Lakeview went back up 19-12 at 145 when Keegan Ellison pinned Drake Walker in 5:30. It was 23-18 after Terry Griser won 11-0 over Reed City’s Devin Ward at 160. Lakeview’s Garrett Cavendish prevailed 7-1 over Dylan Chrispell at 171. With the forfeits at 103 and 112, Lakeview prevailed and is 3-1in the CSAA.

 

Tri County’s girls basketball team improved its record to 4-2 with a 38-32 victory over Fremont on Friday in Lakes 8 Conference action. Fremont is 0-5. Tri County led 13-6 after the first quarter, 21-14 at halftime and 29-23 after the third quarter. Both teams had nine points in the fourth. Alexis Firovich had 16 points for Tri County while Elise Ketelaar added 10.

Aaron Leacher scored eight points and had four steals but it wasn’t enough for Mount Pleasant on Friday in a 66-41 loss to Holland in the Hope College Holiday Tournament. T.J. Johnson had seven points and 11 rebounds while Jalee Hogan added six points and 10 boards. Holland was up 12-9 after the first quarter, 35-24 at halftime and 46-31 after the third quarter, and had a 20-10 scoring advantage in the fourth. Holland had 12 3-pointers in the game.

 

Holland is 4-0 and Mount Pleasant 4-1.

 

Morley Stanwood evened its record to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the CSAA with a 58-28 boys basketball victory over White Cloud Tuesday night. Morley Stanwood was up 18-5 after the first quarter, 43-12 at halftime and 65-16 after the third quarter White Cloud had a 12-3 scoring edge in the fourth. Nic Huntey scored 15 points while Tim Cairnduff added 12 points and Chase Huntey and Jon Lagendyk added eight apiece.

 

Chippewa Hills fell to 1-3 in the Central State Activities Association and 1-4 overall with a 77-53 loss to Big Rapids Tuesday night. Big Rapids was up 22-15 after the third quarter, 46-32 at halftime and 64-45 after the third quarter. Hunter Conley scored 16 points for Chippewa Hills while Michael Todd netted nine points and Austin Issette and Luke Recker added seven points apiece.

 

Big Rapids improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Central State Activities Association with a 77-53 boys basketball victory Tuesday night. Big Rapids was up 22-15 after the third quarter, 46-32 at halftime and 64-45 after the third quarter. Quinn Tyson had seven field goals and three 3-pointers while shooting 8-of-10 from the line for 31 points. Austin Hayes had three field goals and three 3-pointers for 15 points. Kyle Brady and Jake Hayes scored seven points apiece.
