Belding improved its girls basketball record to 4-1 with a 54-35 win over Cedar Springs on Jan. 3.

 

Belding was up 15-4 after the first quarter, 24-15 at halftime and 37-25 after the third quarter an outscored Cedar Springs 17-10 in the fourth. McKenzie  Breimayer scored 21 points while Monica Baylis added 10 points. Peyton Mount had eight points and Stephanie Harig and Katie Wood added six apiece.

 

Belding fell to 2-3 with a 68-57 loss to Cedar Springs on Friday. Belding was up 13-11 after the first quarter but Cedar Springs led 27-13 at halftime. The Red Hawks had a 24-8 scoring advantage in the third. Belding had a 26-17 scoring advantage in the fourth but it wasn’t enough to overtake Cedar Springs. Cole Hart scored 16 points for Belding while Garrett Strothede added 15 and Tye Wittenbach had 11.

 

Morley Stanwood’s boys basketball team beat Central Montcalm 57-50 on Wednesday and is 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the CSAA. Andrew Sackett had the hot hand for Morley Stanwood with 13 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks and Tim Cairnduff added 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Nic Huntey had 12 points and five assists, Chase Huntey seven points, four steals and five rebounds. Jon Lagendyk had eight points for the Mohawks.

Big Rapids Crossroads girls basketball team outscored Bear Lake 20-4 in the  fourth quarter en route to a 49-44 West Michigan D League victory on Wednesday. Bear Lake led 13-6 after the first quarter and 23-20 at halftime. Bear Lake was up 40-29 after the third quarter but was outscored in the fourth.

 

Crossroads is 6-1 overall and 5-0 in the WMD. Alyssa Larson scored 12 points for Crossroads while Kaela Brooks had 11 and Katlin Reed added nine.

Big Rapids’ hockey team lost 4-3 to Grand Rapids Catholic in hockey action on Wednesday.

Jeremiah McReynolds scored the first goal for Big Rapids on an assist from Garrett Daum. West Catholic would net the next two goals. Jordan Smith netted Big Rapids’ second goal with assists from Garrett Garner and Brad Walling.

 

Big Rapids tied the game in the third on a shot by Garner.

Big Rapids’ wrestling team was 0-2 on Wednesday with Central State Activities Association losses to Hesperia 70-4 and Chippewa Hills 63-8.

 

Alim Mohammad won for Big Rapids 15-5 against the Warriors but fell 4-2 to  the Panthers. His loss was the first of the season. But he was bumped up to 145 pounds for that weight class. His normal spot is at 140.

Chippewa Hills was 1-1 in wrestling action Wednesday in Central State Activities Association action.

The Warriors beat Big Rapids but lost 35-28 to Hesperia. Kaden Ellis and Zach King had pins against Hesperia. Eric Russell had a pin for a 28-20 Chip Hills lead but Hesperia scored the next 15 points.

Several area Class D teams are ranked in the Associated Press’ Michigan girls basketball poll this week.The Class D honorees are Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart 5-1 at No. 3 and Fulton Middleton 4-1 at No. 8. Honorable mention teams are Fowler at 4-1, Portland St. Patrick at 7-1 and Big Rapids Crossroads Charter Academy at 5-1.

 

Several area Class C teams are ranked in the Associated Press’ Michigan girls basketball poll this week. Saginaw Nouvel is 4-2 at No. 5, Morley Stanwood is 6-0 at No. 9. Honorable mention teams are Pewamo Westphalia at 5-0, Carson City Crystal at 5-2, New Lothrop, Breckenridge at 5-1, and Montabella at 4-2.

For Class B, Goodrich is 4-0 at No. 1, Flint Powers is 7-1 at No. 3, Eaton Rapids is 6-0 at No. 5, Bullock Creek is 4-0 at No. 6, Wayland is 5-0 at No. 10, and honorable mention teams are Portland at 7-1, Clare at 5-1, Charlotte at 5-0, Ionia at 4-1, Reese is No. 1 with a 7-0 record. Hemlock is 5-0 at No. 4.
