Tim Cairnduff scored 27 points to lead Morley Stanwood to a 64-52 victory over Chippewa Hills in boys basketball action on Tuesday. The Mohawks improved to 4-3 overall and 4-2 in the CAA.

Morley Stanwood was up 19-11 after the first quarter, 31-22 at halftime and 43-40 after the third quarter. The Mohawks had a 21-12 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to cinch the win.

 

Cairnduff had three field goals and three triples for 27 points. He was 12-of-12 from the free-throw line. Andrew Sackett added 13 points.

Big Rapids girls basketball team fell to Chippewa Hills 58-44 Wednesday night in Central State Activities Association action.

Kailey Hunt had 12 points while Aliza Hengesbach netted 11 points and Ashley Seath added eight points.

Chippewa Hills’ girls basketball team improved to 6-2 with a 58-44 victory Wednesday night over Big Rapids.

 

Hannah Guy had 26 points while Kendall Boone added 13 points and Callee Stirn had 11 points.

Big Rapids girls Crossroads basketball team improved to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the West Michigan D League with a 63-10 win over Walkerville on Wednesday.

 

Malory Carlson had 24 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Katie Haner added nine points and five rebounds. Miranda Carlson had seven points and Kaela Brooks had six steals.

All-state cross country runner Megan O’Nell of Chippewa Hills has verbally committed to run cross and track for the University of Wisconsin.

O’Neil, also a standout distance runner in track for the Warriors, will be running track and cross for the Badgers.

O’Neil had been recruited by other schools including Central Michigan University, prior to making her decision to run at Wisconsin.

She was third at the Grand Rapids Cougar Invitational Sept. 21 in 19:11. She won the Michigan State Invitational Bronze Division in 18:10 on Sept. 14. She finished first in the Central State Activities Association jamboree at Lakeview in 19:45.97.

 

She was seventh in the Division 2 state finals last year in 18:14.2. She finished ninth in the 2011 finals in 18:29.2. As a freshman, O’Neil was third in 17:47.8.

Big Rapids’ boys basketball team improved to 6-1 with a 63-29 romp over White Cloud on Wednesday in Central State Activities Association.

 

Quinn Tyson led the Cardinals with 15 points while Jake and Austin Hayes added 15 points apiece.

Chippewa Hills’ wrestling team, ranked No. 8 in the state, improved to 18-4 overall and 5-1 in the CSAA with a sweep of Central State Activities Association foes on Wednesday night. The Warriors blanked Newaygo 83-0 and lost to Central Montcalm 57-12.

 

Chippewa Hills has three wrestlers ranked in Division 3 with Richie Ostrander No. 8 at 103 with a 7-3 mark; Zack King ranked No. 4 at 112 with a 24-2 record and Kevin Briscoe has a No. 8 rating at 145 with a 19-8 mark.

It’s been quite a week for Quinn Tyson of Big Rapids. Earlier this week, Tyson passed the 1,000-point career mark in a game against Holton. Later in the week, Ferris State basketball coach Andy Bronkema announced that Tyson and Zach Hankins of Charlevoix are members of his 2014 recruiting class.

Tyson sparked the Cardinals to the Class B state quarterfinals while averaging 22 points per game as a junior. He has led Big Rapids to a 6-1 start so far this season.

 

Ferris said it will redshirt Tyson next season and play him during the 2015-16 season.

Ithaca nearly handed Valley Lutheran its first loss of the season Tuesday night. But Ithaca fell to 4-2 with a 65-64 loss in overtime. The first half was bizarre. Ithaca had a 23-8 lead after the first quarter. Then Valley Lutheran exploded in the second quarter with a 39-12 advantage and led 38-25 at halftime and 51-47 after the third quarter. It was 59-all after regulation and Valley Lutheran had a 6-5 scoring edge in overtime.

Logan Hessbrook scored 19 points for Ithaca.

Saginaw Valley Lutheran got a major scare from Ithaca Monday night in boys basketball action but won 65-64 in overtime and has a 7-0 record. Valley Lutheran is 4-0 in the Tri-Valley West.
