Taylor Johnson was a three-sport standout when she played at Belding High School. She’s now in the final weeks of a brilliant collegiate basketball career.

On Jan. 19, Johnson scored 12 points in Central’s 82-79 overtime victory over Bowling Green.

 

Johnson passed the 1,000-point mark with her performance. She’s only the 23rd player in school history to break 1,000 points. Central improved to 5-0 in the MAC.

 

Lakeview improved to 8-0 overall and 7-0 in the Central State Activities Association with a 43-41 victory over Big Rapids on Tuesday. John Zualuga-Torres scored the winning basket for Lakeview. Nate Shurlow had 15 points to lead the winners.

 

Central Montcalm on Tuesday improved its record to 5-4 overall and 3-4 in the Central State Activities Association with a 70-53 victory over Hesperia. Lane Ledford scored 24 points for Central Montcalm while Todd Switzer and Jake Ebel had 11 points apiece, and Jesse Hoffman netted 10 points.

 

Belding improved its record to 6-3 on Tuesday with a 61-52 victory over Saranac. McKenzie Breimayer had the hot hand for Belding with 29 points. Peyton Mount had 12 points for Belding while Monica Baylis had nine points and nine rebounds. Stefanie Harig had five assists.

 

Greenville’s boys basketball team lost to Holland West Ottawa 83-72 on Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets are 5-4. Parker Syrjala led Greenville with 25 points while Cooper had 19 points and Stephen Roy added 11 points.

 

Area Class D girls basketball teams have gained recognition this week by the Associated Press. Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart is ranked 15th and Middleton Fulton 16th.

 

Area Class C girls basketball teams have gained recognition this week by the Associated Press. Reese is No. 1 at 10-0 while Hemlock is No. 2 at 9-0, Saginaw Nouvel No. 6 at 7-3 and St. Louis No. 10 at 8-1. Morley Stanwood is 11th, Pewamo-Westphalia 12th and New Lothrop 19th.

 

Area Class B girls basketball teams have gained recognition this week by the Associated Press. That includes Flint Powers Catholic which is second at 11-1, Midland Bullock Creek fifth at 8-1, Eaton Rapids eighth at 8-3, Portland ninth at 8-2 and Wayland 10th at 8-2. Also, Charlotte is 14th, Clare 15th and Freeland 22nd.

 

 

Area Class A girls basketball teams have gained recognition this week by the Associated Press. That includes DeWitt which, with a 9-1 record, is ranked No. 1. Bloomfield Hills Marian is ranked first in the state at 11-0 and Detroit Martin Luther King second at 10-1. Midland at 8-1 is ranked fifth. Holt is ranked 10th, Grand Ledge 11th, Haslett 13th and Okemos 20th.

 

 

Saginaw Swan Valley defeated Alma 66-57 in girls basketball action on Tuesday. Swan Valley was up 21-11 after the first quarter and 42-28 at halftime. Alma cut the deficit with a 14-5 advantage in the third quarter. Swan Valley put the game away with a 19-15 scoring edge in the final quarter. Lauren Addy scored 24 points and had nine rebounds and four assists for Swan Valley while Sarah Addy scored 17 points and had five steals, and Kayla Fong and Jenna Stevenson both added 11. Stevenson had five rebounds apiece.
