EAST LANSING – The Michigan High School Athletic Association has selected 10 student-athletes from Class C and D member schools to receive scholarships through its Scholar-Athlete Award program. Kirstin Olling is among the recipients.
 
Farm Bureau Insurance, in its 25th year of sponsoring the award, will give $1,000 college scholarships to 32 individuals who represent their member schools in at least one sport in which the Association sponsors a postseason tournament. The first 30 scholarships are awarded proportionately by school classification and the number of student-athletes involved in those classes; also, there are two at-large honorees which can come from any classification.

Each of the scholarship recipients will be honored at halftime ceremonies of the Class C Boys Basketball Final game March 22 at the Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing. Commemorative medallions will be given to the finalists in recognition of their accomplishments.

The Class C Scholar-Athlete Award honorees are: Melissa Dowell, Clinton; Erin McDonnell, Traverse City St. Francis; Kirsten Olling, Breckenridge; Stephen T. Erwin, Royal Oak Shrine Catholic; Devin Morrow, Three Oaks River Valley; and Ty Michael Rollin, Beal City.

The Class D Scholar-Athlete Award recipients are:  MacKenzie Ciganick, Bellaire; Sara Inbody, Deckerville; Grant Hohlbein, Adrian Lenawee Christian; and Steven McKenzie, Marcellus.

 

Kirsten Olling, Breckenridge

Became the seventh in MHSAA girls cross country history to win four Finals championships and set the Lower Peninsula Division 4 Finals record with a time of 17:44.9. Also won the MHSAA Lower Peninsula Division 4 3,200-meter run championship the last three seasons and the 1,600 as a freshman. Served as captain of her cross country team the last three seasons and her track and field team. Named academic all-state in cross country three seasons. Served as her class’ vice president and the yearbook sports editor and won multiple leadership awards as part of the Future Farmers of America. Served as an assistant coach for her local Girls on the Run program. Will attend Arizona State University.

 Essay Quote: “Sportsmanship is more than just playing fair. True sportsmanship is knowing that your opponent has the same goals, helping others reach those goals and working hard every day. … I get excited when I hear I get to race against the best. Sportsmanship is not about being happy even if you lose, but it is about helping your competition be their best.”

Other Class C girls finalists for the Scholar-Athlete Award were: Korinna Corbin, Addison; Elizabeth Baker, Bronson; Amanda Reagle, Homer; Mandy Haferkorn, Iron Mountain; Megan Chapman, Ishpeming Westwood; Keara Wilson, Marlette; Grace Leighton, Mendon; Allie Kendall, Saginaw Nouvel; and Kari Feddema, Schoolcraft.

 

Other Class C boys finalists for the Scholar-Athlete Award were: Matthew S. Johnson, Fennville; Carter Ballinger, Jonesville; Luke Joseph Smigielski, Mancelona; Dakota Hall, Marlette; Bradley Schaub, Marlette; Kyle Baxter, Mayville; Jason Beckman, Shelby; James Barber, St Charles; and Nicholas DeSimpelare, Unionville-Sebewaing.

Carrollton tied for sixth with Essexville Garber in the TVC Wrestling Tournament Saturday at Caro. Birch Run was first at 222, followed by Caro at 198, Saginaw Swan Valley 166.5, Alma 118, Freeland 109.5, Essexville Garber and Carrollton at 103, St. Louis at 93.5, North Branch 91.5, Chesaning 89, Millington 86.5, Hemlock 78, Midland Bullock Creek 64.5, Ithaca 63, Shepherd 41, Ovid-Elsie 34, Frankenmuth 32, Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary 28, Otisville LakeVille Memorial 20, Saginaw Valley Lutheran 10 and Breckenridge 6.

 

Carrollton had three wrestlers in the consolation finals. Jeff Luth blanked Patrick Ford of Caro 2-0 for third place while Jacob Mejia took fourth place after falling to Tyler Coleman of Ovid-Elsie 6-0. Caleb Gallant of Carrollton took third after pinning Stephen Hart of Alma in 2:18.

For Freeland, Charlies Ferens was first at 140 pounds and  Josh Schlak second at 135 pounds. Also for Freeland, Graham Fitkin at 130 pounds and Keegan Reimus at 215 were fourth-place finishers.

Joe Foret won an individual title for Essexville Garber at 285 pounds by pinning Mykhalo Hetmansky of St. Louis in 3:55. Ryan Christenen lost to Trevor O’Connor of Caro in the 103-pound weight class finals on an 11-0 major decision and took second place. Noah Bargouthy of Esseexville Garber lost an 8-5 decision to Mitch Franklin of Birch Run on the 215-pound weight class finals in 3:56.

Alma took fourth place at the TVC wrestling tournament Saturday at Caro. Birch Run was first at 222, followed by Caro at 198, Saginaw Swan Valley 166.5, Alma 118, Freeland 109.5, Essexville Garber and Carrollton at 103, St. Louis at 93.5, North Branch 91.5, Chesaning 89, Millington 86.5, Hemlock 78, Midland Bullock Creek 64.5, Ithaca 63, Shepherd 41, Ovid-Elie 34, Frankenmuth 32, Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary 28, Otisville LakeVille Memorial 20, Saginaw Valley Lutheran 10 and Breckenridge 6.

 

In consolation matches for third and fourth place, Boyd Hubbard won at 160 pounds 14-3. Sage Gonzales was pinned in 52 seconds at 135 pounds by Justin Elliot of Birch Run,  Stephen Hart was pinned in 2:18 by Caleb Gallant of Carrollton at 2:18 and Alex Lopez was pinned at 285 by Steve Decker of Swan Valley.

Saginaw Swan Valley took third in the TVC wrestling tournament conducted Saturday at Caro. Birch Run was first at 222, followed by Caro at 198, Saginaw Swan Valley 166.5, Alma 118, Freeland 109.5, Essexville Garber and Carrollton at 103, St. Louis at 93.5, North Branch 91.5, Chesaning 89, Millington 86.5, Hemlock 78, Midland Bullock Creek 64.5, Ithaca 63, Shepherd 41, Ovid-Elie 34, Frankenmuth 32, Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary 28, Otisville LakeVille Memorial 20, Saginaw Valley Lutheran 10 and Breckenridge 6. 

 

Steve Decker took third place at 285 pounds for Swan Valley by pinning Alex Lopez of Alma in 4:17 in the consolation finals. In the finals for Swan Valley, KJ Sutor at 112 pounds won 16-0 in a technical fall over Chandler White of Frankenmuth. Matt Santos at 125 pounds beat Jerry Fenner 2-0, Collin Dole edged Josh Schlak of Freeland 3-2 at 135 pounds for first place, Sam McLean won 3-2 over Brett Green for first at 145 pounds. Josh Flore took second at 150.

Birch Run won the TVC wrestling tournament conducted Saturday at Caro.

 Birch Run was first at 222, followed by Caro at 198, Saginaw Swan Valley 166.5, Alma 118, Freeland 109.5, Essexville Garber and Carrollton at 103, St. Louis at 93.5, North Branch 91.5, Chesaning 89, Millington 86.5, Hemlock 78, Midland Bullock Creek 64.5, Ithaca 63, Shepherd 41, Ovid-Elie 34, Frankenmuth 32, Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary 28, Otisville LakeVille Memorial 20, Saginaw Valley Lutheran 10 and Breckenridge 6. Mitch Franklin won the 152-pound weight class for Birch Run while Jared Elliott was tops at 160. They got seconds from Drew Cox at 119 and Jerry Fenner at 125.  George Lahar was second at 215. Birch Run took third at 130 with Adam Grim, 135 with Justin Elliott and 140 with Ean Taylor.

 

Morley Stanwood’s Mekayla Carey has verbally agreed to join the Ferris State volleyball program starting with the 2015 season. Carey was a junior for last season Morley Stanwood volleyball squad that won a CSAA title and district championship. She was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association High School Phenom list.

Chippewa Hills’ wrestling team was second at the Central State Activities Association meet at Lakeview on Saturday.

All 13 wrestlers for Chippewa Hills placed.

Individual champs for the Warriors included Richie Ostrander at 103, Zach King at 119 and Kevin Briscoe at 152.

 

Mike Felix at 125, Slade Todd at 135, Mason Dey at 145, Eric Russell at 171 and Brenden Berry at 215 took second place for Chippewa Hills.

 

Bay City John Glenn was fourth in Saturday’s Tri-Cities Meet at Saginaw Valley State University. Midland Dow was first at 712. Saginaw Heritage was second at 474, followed by Bay City Western at 326, Bay City John Glenn at 225, Midland at 216, Bay City Central at 214 and Essexville Garber at 105.  Jacob Reder led John Glenn with a second-place in the 100-yard butterfly in 57.81 seconds.
