Big Rapids’ girls basketball team fell to 5-11 overall and 5-9 in the CSAA with a 57-50 loss to Morley Stanwood Monday night. Morley Stanwood had quarter leads of 17-9, 31-19, and 38-36, and outscored the Cards 57-50 in the final eight minutes. Reba Bowen had 16 points for Big Rapids.

 

Morley Stanwood improved to 15-2 overall and 13-2 in the CSAA with a 57-50 win over Big Rapids in girls basketball action on Monday. Morley Stanwood had quarter leads of 17-9, 31-19, and 38-36 and outscored the Cards 57-50 in the final eight minutes. Lindsay Veersma led the winners with 17 points.

 

Chippewa Hills’ girls basketball team improved to 13-3 overall and 12-3 in the Central State Activities Association with a 48-46 win over Reed City on Monday. Chip Hills trailed 21-8 after the first quarter but led 24-19 at halftime and 39-35 after the third quarter. Hannah Guy led the Warriors with 16 points. Emily Stark added 10.

 

Big Rapids’ hockey team fell to 4-15-2 with a 7-6 overtime loss against Mount Pleasant on Monday.  Sterling Brinker scored Big Rapids’ first goal on an assist from Garrett Garner. Brinker assisted on Jordan Smith’s goal to give BR a 2-1 lead. Jeremiah McReynolds scored with assist to Brinker and Brad Walling for a 3-1 lead. Brinker scored again on an assist from Smith for a 4-2 lead. Michael Green scored for the Cards, assisted by Brendan Bomay, to make it 5-3. Garner scored the sixth Cardinal goal.

 

Mount Pleasant’s hockey team defeated Big Rapids 7-6 in overtime Monday at Ferris State. The Oilers scored three unanswered goals in the final nine minutes and converted two minutes into overtime. Robert Backus scored the first goal for the Oilers, assisted by Collin Lambert and Bryce Bolles. Zach Heeke scored the second goal with assists to Lambert and Ramon. Michael Haine had MP’s third goal on an assist by Backus. Max Heeke had the fourth goal for the Oilers and assisted Backus on No 5. Heeke scored the sixth goal to send the game into overtime. Heeke scored the game winner.

 

Big Rapids’ hockey team defeated Mattawan 4-2 action on Saturday. Sterling Brinker scored two goals for Big Rapids while Brad Wallon and Nathan Sigmund had one goal apiece. Joey Hinds was the winning goalkeeper for Big Rapids.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association has announced that it has selected eight student-athletes from Class B member schools to receive scholarships through its Scholar-Athlete Award program.
 

Farm Bureau Insurance is in its 25th year of sponsoring the award, and gives $1,000 college scholarships to 32 individuals who represent their member schools in at least one sport in which the Association sponsors a postseason tournament. The first 30 scholarships are awarded proportionately by school classification and number of student-athletes involved in those classes; also, there are two at-large honorees who can come from any classification.

Each of the scholarship recipients will be honored at halftime ceremonies of the Class C Boys Basketball Final game March 22 at the Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing.

 

Other Class B boys finalists for the Scholar-Athlete Award were: Tye Wittenbach of Belding and Ryan Spaulding of Freeland.

Bailey Baker, Eaton Rapids

Baker expects to graduate with a school-record 16 varsity letters – four each in volleyball, basketball, softball and track and field. Earned both all-state honorable mention in softball and was an MHSAA Finals runner-up in discus as a junior, when she made the Lansing State Journal all-area Dream Teams in both sports; also has earned all-league honors in both volleyball and basketball. She is serving as captain of the basketball team for the second season and captained the volleyball team for three years. Baker participated in National Honor Society for three years and raised more than $1,000 for a food program among other volunteer efforts; also organized a fundraiser that led to the distribution of more than $6,000 in goods. She served on the yearbook staff for three years including as editor, and also as a volunteer coach for numerous youth basketball and volleyball camps. Undecided on where she will attend college and her field of study.
