Carson City Crystal’s girls basketball team improved to 21-1 on Tuesday with a 38-34 win over Grandville Calvin Christian in the Class C regional semifinals. The Eagle were up 12-9 after the first quarter, 18-11 at halftime and 25-23 after the third quarter. Mackenzie Geister had 15 points for the Eagles.

 

Dalton Roberts of Fowlerville had a second-place effort last week at the Division 2 state wrestling finals at Auburn Hills. He won his first three matches with a technical fall, major decision and decision. He lost to Dominic Lajoie of Gaylord in the title match by an 11-7 decision. Mason Litz of Fowlerville was sixth after losing to Rylen Droscha of Mason by fall in 1:55. 

 

Tristen Zienkewicz of Farwell is a state champion. He went 4-0 last weekend at Auburn Hills in the Division 3 state wrestling finals. Zienkiewicz had three decisions and a pin to take the win. He decisioned Jared Elliott of Birch Run in the title match. Glenn Beardsley of Farwell was third at 112. He beat Arthur Payne of Montrose Hill-McCloy 2-1 in the consolation finals.

 

Joe Foret at 285 pounds placed fourth in the Division 3 state championship for Essexville-Garber at Auburn Hills. Foret won his consolation semifinal in a tiebreaker over Presley Kellogg of Michigan Center but lost the match for third place to Hunter Shaw in another tie breaker.

 

Jaedin Sklapsky placed second for Eaton Rapids at the Division 2 state finals at 130 pounds last weekend at Auburn Hills. Sklapsky has received a bye and won his quarterfinals and semifinal match. He lost his first-round match by the ultimate tiebreaker to Darek Bullock-Mills of Niles.  Lane McVicker placed fifth at 135 pounds after going 4-2. He won his fifth-place match with a decision over Tommy Martinez of Fruitport.

 

Brian Darios of East Lansing picked up a second place last weekend in the Division state wrestling finals at The Palace of Auburn Hills. He won his first three matches on decisions of 4-1 and 3-2, and a fall in 5:20. He wrestled Parker Tillman of Forest Hills Central in the finals and lost in the ultimate tie breaker. Kamyab Kamali was 1-3 at 152 pounds and did not place.

 

Jordan Pierce, Durand’s only wrestler in the Division 4 state finals last weekend, was 1-2 and did not place. He beat Tim Smith of Benzie Central on an 8-4 decision his second match of the weekend. He lost to Eric Fader of Sanford Meridian and to Joe Foret of Essexvlle-Garber.

 

Austin Melton brought home a state championship to DeWitt last weekend. He placed first in the 134-pound division at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Melton won the title match over Collin Lieber of Croswell-Lexington 13-4. Kameron Melton was seventh for DeWitt at 135 pounds. In the match for seventh, he beat Donald Janice of Warren Woods-Tower with a pin in 2:51.

 

Two Clare wrestlers placed in the state finals last weekend at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Logan Emery went 4-3 and placed sixth at 160. He beat Boyd Hubbard of Alma to advance to the consolation finals where he lost to Donny Mandell of Dundee on a pin and to Chase Bard of Allegan on a decision. Brandon Ayris was seventh at 171. He was 3-2 for the weekend. In his last match, he defeated Ben McCann of Midland Bullock Creek for seventh.

 

Cedar Springs had one wrestler competing in the Division 2 state finals Saturday at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Zachary Wamser competed at 171 pounds and went 0-2. He lost a major decision to Max Dean of Lowell and lost on a pin to Hunter McCoy of Dearborn Heights Anapolis.
