The season is over for Bay City Central’s wrestling team. Central sent three wrestlers to the Division 1 finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills but each one wasn’t able to place. Davon Jackson at 160 and Andre Houston at 189 were both 1-2. Tyler Vincent at 103 was 0-2.

 

The season is over for Bath’s wrestling team. Bath sent one wrestler, Chris Boot, with a 33-6 record, to the state finals at The Palace of Auburn Hills. He lost his first and third matches and won his second, but did not place. His victory was by injury default over Sam Johnson of Holly.

 

Bay City Western’s venture to the state finals for Division 2 at The Palace of Auburn Hills was highlighted by a second-place effort from  Jacob Alarie at 215 pounds. Alarie won his first three matches including a 7-6 decision in the semifinals over Chase Challender of Charlotte. In the finals, he was pinned in 1:50 by Josh Colegrove of Lowell. Thomas Schoenherr at 135 pounds and Christian Schoenherr at 140 were fourth-place finishers.

 

Boyd Hubbard of Alma is an all-state wrestler. Hubbard placed eighth at the state finals last weekend at The Palace of Auburn Hills for Division 3 wrestlers at 150 pounds. Hubbard was 2-3 for the weekend. His wins were 14-9 over Trip Thommen of Whitehall and 4-3 over Austin Pawlak of Richmond. Damian Castillo was 1-2 at 130 pounds and did not place.

Both wrestlers that qualified for the meet from Big Rapids, Nate Weckesser at 125 pounds and Alim Muhammed at 140, were all-state. Weckesser placed third and Muhammed was fifth in Division 3.

Weckesser won a decision over Zach Blevins of Dundee 6-2 and then won the third-place match with the ultimate tie breaker over Matt Santos of Saginaw Swan Valley 3-2.

 

Muhammed lost his consolation match in the semis to Jordan Bennett of Lake Odessa-Lakewood 5-3. But he won his match for fifth place over Dylan Unger of Shelby 4-2.

Chippewa Hills sent eight wrestlers to the Division 3 state meet at The Palace and three came home with all-state finishes.

Richie Ostrander triumphed in overtime 6-5 over Ethan Woods of Manchester in the consolation semifinals. For third place, he beatd Nick McGhan of Tri County 8-5.

Briscoe beat Jake VanScoter 5-3 in the consolation semifinals at 145 and in the third-place match on Saturday, he lost 4-3 to Adam Kehr of Reed City.

Dey, wrestling at the same class, had lost to Kehr 4-1 in the consolation semifinals. In his fifth-place match, Dey lost 11-8 to Jake VanScoter of Richmond to take sixth place.

Freeland High School

Sports: Basketball, soccer, and volleyball

Grade: Junior

GPA: 3.7

Season Accolades: Averaged over 20 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists per game. Helped lead the Falcons to a district basketball championship and into the regional final against Bullock Creek. (No Results before press time.)

Accomplishments: Basketball: second-team all-conference sophomore year. Honorable mention freshman year. Three-year starter on varsity. Went to final four as a freshman. Soccer: All-state, three-year starter, district champion. Volleyball: Three-year starter. Outside school: Member of elite travel basketball team, Michigan Crossover Elite, that played in Nike Nationals in Augusta, Georgia.

Future: Plans to study nursing in college and hopes to play a sport at the next level.

The Algevon Eichelberger File

Saginaw High School

Grade: Sophomore

Sport: Basketball

Season Accolade: Nominated player of the year by his teammates.

GPA: 3.9

Accomplishments: Varsity basketball since ninth grade, National Honor Society, A average in high school, peer mentor, tutor.

Future: Plans to to be class valedictorian, get recruited to a Division I college for academics as well as athletics, and major in mathematics. Knows that God has GREAT plans for his life and all things are possible through Him. 

The Tania Davis File

Goodrich High School

Grade: Junior

Sport: Basketball

Season accolades: Guided the Martians to a 20-2 record and a district championship. Goodrich made it into the regional final, where it played Powers Catholic. (No results before press time.)

GPA: 3.7

Accomplishments: Back-to-back Class B state champion. All-state honorable mention. National Honor Society.

Future: Playing college basketball and pursuing a career in medicine.

The Josh Wendling File

New Lothrop High School

Grade: Senior

Sports: Wrestling and football

Season accolades: Helped lead New Lothrop to the D4 state wrestling championship. Wrapped up his high school career by winning the D4 state championship at 160 pounds. Helped lead the football team to the state semifinals before losing to Muskegon Catholic Central.

 

 

 

Logan Hessbrook scored 20 points while Jacob Smith added 14 points to lead Ithaca to a 60-57 Class C district semifinal boys basketball victory over Morley Stanwood Wednesday. Ithaca, which led 27-23 at halftime, will play in the district title game with host Lakeview on Friday.

 

Big Rapids’ Crossroads boys basketball season ended at 6-15 with a 54-41 loss to Marion Wednesday in Class D district semifinal action. Aron Garland scored 17 points for Crossroads. Marion was up 15-11 after the first quarter, 24-19 at halftime and 45-33 after the third quarter.
