Alex Young placed second for Portland in the Division 3 state finals earlier this month in Auburn Hills. Young won three decisions to get to the finals. But he lost to Nate Limmex of Grand Rapids Catholic Central on a technical fall. Portland also had Dominic Gardner at 112, Paul Savage at 112 and Derek Gardner at 145 but neither wrestlers placed.

 

Taylor Krupp and Josh Wendling brought home state titles for New Lothrop in the wrestling finals earlier this month. Wendling was the Division 4 champ at 160 pounds in the title match at Auburn Hills. He won by decision over Mark Workman in the finals to finish at 4-0 for the tournament. Taylor Krupp was a perfect 56-0 for the season with a 4-0 run in the state meet. He won by decision in the finals over Shane Rodenburg of Kent City. Also for New Lothrop, Cody Symons was third at 189 pounds, Connor Krupp fifth at 103, Aaron Bauman was third at 145, Owen Wilson sixth at 215, Gabe Bennett fifth at 130 and Steve Garza II fifth at 140.

 

Jason Petras scored both goals for Farmington in the first period for  2-1 victory over Sault Ste. Marie in the Division 3 hockey title game on Saturday at Plymouth. Roman Firestone, rake cole and Nick Heffron had assists for Farmington. John Lethemon was the winning goalie. Farmington ends the season at 22-10 and Sault Ste. Marie at 25-3-2.

 

Trenton’s offense was too much for Hartland in a 8-3 victory in the Division 2 state title game for hockey on Saturday. Justin Dunn led the way with three goals for Trenton while Mitchell Gala also had three goals and Quinn Preston and Philip Pugliese had one apiece. Trenton is 26-4-1.

 

The Division 1 hockey title is back in Detroit Catholic Central’s trophy case. The Shamrocks defeated Brighton 5-1 in Saturday’s title game at Plymouth. Carter Cerretani and Ryan Burnett scored two goals apiece for Catholic Central, which also netted a goal from Domenic Mancinelli. Danny Bosio had Brighton’s only goal.

 

Mikhail Myles of Corunna netted his 1,000th career point early on Wednesday in a Class B district semifinal loss to Flint Southwestern. He joined his brother J.J. Myles, who scored his 1,000-point earlier this season.

Midland Bullock Creek had three wrestlers place in the Division 3 state finals last weekend at Auburn Hills. Nick Torres was fifth at 130 pounds. He won a decision in the fifth-place match over Blake Russo of Grand Rapids West Catholic. Adam McCann was seventh at 140. He won by decision 4-3 in the seventh-place match over Niko Guaardo of Grant. Ben McCann was eighth at 171 pounds. He lost a decision for seventh place to Brandon Ayris 6-3.

Middleton-Fulton had a place finisher last weekend in the Division 4 state finals at Auburn Hills.  Trevor Hilgendorf was seventh at 112 pounds. He was 3-2 for the tournament. In his final match, Hilgendorf beat Jordan Stone of Pine River 9-1.

 Fulton also had Clint Kupiece at the tourney at 130 pounds. He was 0-2.

Ryan Droscha of Mason  was fifth at 171 pounds in the Division 2 state wrestling finals last weekend at Auburn Hills. Droscha won his first two matches with a pin over Wayne Williams of Ferndale and a decision over Brandon Deszell of Goodrich. He lost his next two matches. But to finish the tournament, he took fifth place with a pin over Mason Litz of Fowlerville.

Lowell boasted three individual state champions last week in Division 2 at Auburn Hills.  Lucas Hall took first at 112 pounds. He pinned Bryan LaVearn of Ortonville-Brandon in the title match. Max Dean was first at 171 pounds. He took a 14-8 decision in the finals over Devon Pingel of North Branch. Josh Colegrove at 215 took first place. He pinned Jacob Alarie of Auburn-Bay City Western in 1:50 in the finals. Garett Stehley was second at 189, Jordan Hall third at 135 and Kanon Dean fifth at 160 and Zeth Dean fifth at 119. Bailey Jack was third at 130 and Derek Krajewski fourth at 125.
