Jordon Bennett at 140 pounds was the only wrestler for Lakewood at the Division 3 state finals last week at Auburn Hills. He won his first match by fall then lost a decision to Doug Rojem of Dundee. Bennett then took the next three matches with one major decision and two regular decisions. He’s 48-3 for the season.

 

Kevin Koenig of Laingsburg at 215 pounds is a Division 4 state champion in wrestling. He was 4-0 at the state finals last weekend at Auburn Hills. Koenig got pins over Noah Thompson of Manton and Jon Rodriquez of Jonesville and then won in overtime over Andrew Selke of Rogers City in the semifinals. He won in the finals by major decision over Patrick Harbin Jr. of Detroit Loyola.

 

Nick McGahn led Tri County with a fourth-place finish in the Division 3 state finals last weekend at The Palace of Auburn Hills. He won his first two matches by technical fall and decision but then lost a decision in the semifinals. He came back to beat Jared Hasenauer of Armada to get to the third-place match. He lost to Richie Ostrander of Chippewa Hills in the consolation finals.

 

Martin Rodriguez led Holt’s effort last weekend at the Division I state finals at Auburn Hills. He took second at 119 pounds. He won his first three matches and then lost a 3-0 decision to Trevor Zdebski of Detroit Catholic Central 3-0. Ben Gomez took third place at 112 pounds. In the consolation finals, he beat Jared Bennett of Rockford 8-3. Mino Trevino was sixth at 130 pounds with a 3-3 record.

Greenville’s Alec Ward placed second at the state finals last weekend to lead the Yellow Jackets wrestling effort at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

 

 Ward won his first three matches and then lost 12-2 to Zac Hall of St. Johns in the first-place match. Will Parmelee at 130 pounds went 3-3 to place seventh for Greenville. He won his last match, a 6-4 decision over Luke Spotts of Fremont.

 

Grand Ledge had two wrestlers at the Division 1 state finals last weekend and both failed to place. Jay Jay Brickley at 119 pounds and Dylan Steward at 130 pounds both lost their first and three matches and won their second for a 1-2 record during the weekend at Auburn Hills.

 

Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart defeated Marion 70-31 at Big Rapids Friday night to win the Class D boys basketball district title. Sacred Heart had quarter leads of 17-11, 46-13 and 66-21. Kevin Gamble had 16 points while Justin Cowell had 12 and Ben Goenner had 10 and Dustin Neyer had nine points. Hyble had 12 rebounds.

Mount Pleasant won the Class A district title on Friday with a 42-40 victory over Midland Dow. Mount Pleasant had an earlier lead of 18-6 before Dow came back. Aaron Leasher led Mount Pleasant with 14 points while Jaleel Hogan had 11 points and 12 rebounds.

 

Portland St. Patrick’s boys basketball team fell to 6-16 to end the season with a 56-41 loss to Fulton Friday night in district championship action. St. Patrick was down 36-35 going in the fourth quarter and got outscored 20-6 in the final eight minutes. Joe Mackowiak led St. Patrick with 14 points and five rebounds.

 

Pewamo-Westphalia used excellent defense to defeat Laingsburg 31-12 in Class C district championship boys basketball action Friday night. P-W had an 18-4 halftime lead.
