Greenville’s Alec Ward placed second at the state finals last weekend to lead the Yellow Jackets wrestling effort at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

 

 Ward won his first three matches and then lost 12-2 to Zac Hall of St. Johns in the first-place match. Will Parmelee at 130 pounds went 3-3 to place seventh for Greenville. He won his last match, a 6-4 decision over Luke Spotts of Fremont.

 

Grand Ledge had two wrestlers at the Division 1 state finals last weekend and both failed to place. Jay Jay Brickley at 119 pounds and Dylan Steward at 130 pounds both lost their first and three matches and won their second for a 1-2 record during the weekend at Auburn Hills.

 

Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart defeated Marion 70-31 at Big Rapids Friday night to win the Class D boys basketball district title. Sacred Heart had quarter leads of 17-11, 46-13 and 66-21. Kevin Gamble had 16 points while Justin Cowell had 12 and Ben Goenner had 10 and Dustin Neyer had nine points. Hyble had 12 rebounds.

Mount Pleasant won the Class A district title on Friday with a 42-40 victory over Midland Dow. Mount Pleasant had an earlier lead of 18-6 before Dow came back. Aaron Leasher led Mount Pleasant with 14 points while Jaleel Hogan had 11 points and 12 rebounds.

 

Portland St. Patrick’s boys basketball team fell to 6-16 to end the season with a 56-41 loss to Fulton Friday night in district championship action. St. Patrick was down 36-35 going in the fourth quarter and got outscored 20-6 in the final eight minutes. Joe Mackowiak led St. Patrick with 14 points and five rebounds.

 

Pewamo-Westphalia used excellent defense to defeat Laingsburg 31-12 in Class C district championship boys basketball action Friday night. P-W had an 18-4 halftime lead.

 

Belding edged Alma 59-58 in overtime on Monday to take the Class B district title. The Redskins won their first district title since 2010. Kole Hart got the winning basket with seven seconds left in OT. Garrett Strotheide led Belding with 31 points. Belding plays Monday at the Pinconning regional.

 

Portland’s boys basketball season ended with a 70-45 loss to Wayland in the Class B district tournament title game on Friday. Portland was outscored 34-15 in the second half. The Raiders were led by Zac Gustafson, who had 17 points including 10 in the first quarter. They ended the season at 15-8.

 

Ionia’s girls basketball season came to an end on Thursday with a  34-25 loss to Eaton Rapids at Leslie. Sarah Swartz scored a team-high 13 points but the Bulldogs struggled in shooting all night. When the third quarter ended, they trailed 26-8 but did put up a rally in the fourth quarter before falling short. Ionia cut it to 28-22 late in the game.

 

Lansing Christian boys basketball season ended at 6-16 with a 57-51 loss to Morrice Friday in the Class D district finals. The leading scorer this season was Justin Terry at 18.6 points and 3.6 rebounds a game. He also had 2.4 steals per game.
