Two St. Louis wrestlers were all-staters in Division 4 this season after the state finals in Auburn Hills. Konnor Holton at 119 pounds was 3-2 for seventh place. He won his seventh-place match by pin over Ishmael Hodge of Bangor in 2:22. Clayton Howd was eighth at 189 pounds. He was 2-3 but lost his last match to Cole Southworth of Decatur 5-1.

 

Three St. Johns wrestlers were state champions this season in Division 2 wrestling at the recent state finals at Auburn Hills. Angus Arthur was 4-0 at 189 pounds to take first. He won his first two matches by pin, his third one by major decision and his fourth on a decision over Garett Stehley of Lowell 5-2.  Logan Massa was 4-0 at 152 to finish an undefeated season. All four of his wins were by pin. Mark Bozzo was second at 135. Ian Parker was third at 112. Drew Wixson was fourth at 160 while Ty Wildmos was fourth at 215 pounds. Zac Hall became the 18th 4-time state champ in Michigan history with his state championship at 140 pounds.

 

Sanford-Meridian boasted a state champ this season at 285 pounds in Division 3. Eric Fader won the tournament at Auburn Hills with a 4-0 record. He won 7-6 in a tiebreaker over Glenn Gerink of Allendale in the finals. Joe Shuler placed fifth at 119 pounds. He won his final match in a pin in 2:18 over Don Nguyen of Wyoming Godwin Heights.

 

KJ Suitor of Saginaw Swan Valley led his team’s effort in the Division 3 state finals at Auburn Hills with a second place finish. Suitor had won three straight matches to get into the finals against Aaron Kilburn of Richmond who took a 4-1 decision. Colin Dole at 135 pounds was third. He won in overtime over Sean Sterling of Dundee in his final match. Matt Santos was fourth at 125. Sam McLean was seventh at 145.

 

Austin Hughes of Saginaw Nouvel Catholic wrestled in the Division 4 state finals earlier this month and placed third at 152 pounds. Hughes won his first match, lost his second one and won his next two to get into the consolation semifinals. He won by tech-fall over Conner Mills of Boyne City and took a  decision in the third-place match over Dillen Decker of Carson  City-Crystal.

 

John Hollingshead led Midland Dow’s effort at the state finals with a fourth-place finish at 103 pounds. The finals were March 1 at Auburn Hills. Hollingshead was 3-2 for the tourney. He won a decision in the consolation semifinals after having lost  in the semis. He lost his third-place match to John Semasz of Westland John Glenn. Cody Graham wrestled at 135 but did not place.

 

Rockford had three wrestlers place earlier this month at the state finals in Auburn Hills. Jared Bennett was fourth at 112 pounds. He won a decision in the consolation finals but lost to Benny Gomez of Holt in the 112-pound finals. Jared Bennett was fourth with a 3-2 record at 112 pounds and Stephen Jendritz was fifth with a 3-2 mark at 119 pounds.

 

Alex Young placed second for Portland in the Division 3 state finals earlier this month in Auburn Hills. Young won three decisions to get to the finals. But he lost to Nate Limmex of Grand Rapids Catholic Central on a technical fall. Portland also had Dominic Gardner at 112, Paul Savage at 112 and Derek Gardner at 145 but neither wrestlers placed.

 

Taylor Krupp and Josh Wendling brought home state titles for New Lothrop in the wrestling finals earlier this month. Wendling was the Division 4 champ at 160 pounds in the title match at Auburn Hills. He won by decision over Mark Workman in the finals to finish at 4-0 for the tournament. Taylor Krupp was a perfect 56-0 for the season with a 4-0 run in the state meet. He won by decision in the finals over Shane Rodenburg of Kent City. Also for New Lothrop, Cody Symons was third at 189 pounds, Connor Krupp fifth at 103, Aaron Bauman was third at 145, Owen Wilson sixth at 215, Gabe Bennett fifth at 130 and Steve Garza II fifth at 140.

 

Jason Petras scored both goals for Farmington in the first period for  2-1 victory over Sault Ste. Marie in the Division 3 hockey title game on Saturday at Plymouth. Roman Firestone, rake cole and Nick Heffron had assists for Farmington. John Lethemon was the winning goalie. Farmington ends the season at 22-10 and Sault Ste. Marie at 25-3-2.
