Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart Fighting Irish are state champions in Class D girls basketball acton. Lexie Methner hit two pressured foul shots with one second to play to seal 56-53 victory over prevously undefeated Crystal Falls Forest Park. Sacred Heart trailed 18-12 after the first quarter, 27-26 at halftime and 43-38 after three quarters. Sacred Heart had an 18-10 scoring edge in the final eight minutes. Averi Gamble led Sacred Heart with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Sacred Heart is 22-5.

 

Midland Bullock Creek’s girls’ basketball season ended at 24-2 with a 52-47 loss to Grand Rapids South Christian in Class B semifinal action Friday. Halee Nieman scored 18 points and had six rebounds for Bullock Creek while Hannah Heldt had 16 points and five boards. Bullock Creek led after the first quarter 12-8 but trailed 27-24 at halftime and 35-34 after the third quarter.

Grand Rapids South Christian ended Midland Bullock Creek’s girls basketball season with a 52-47 victory Friday night at Michigan State in Class B  action. South Christian will enter the title game on Saturday with a 26-0 record. Bullock Creek’s season ends at 24-2.

 

Bullock Creek led after the first quarter 12-8 but trailed 27-24 at halftime and 35-34 after the third quarter. South Christian had a 17-13 edge in the final quarter. Markayla Vander and Morgan Torres had 11 points and five rebounds apiece for South Christian.

 

Grand Ledge’s season ended at 24-3 with a 35-28 loss to Canton on Friday at Michigan State in the Class A semifinal girls basketball game. Grand Ledge was up 6-5 after the first quarter and it was tied 19-19 after the third quarter. Canton had a 16-9 lead in the fourth. Lindsay Orwat had nine points and two boards while Cori Crocker had eight points and 11 rebounds for Grand Ledge.

 

Canton takes a 22-4 record into the title game for Class A girls Saturday thanks to a 35-28 win over Grand Ledge on Friday in semifinal action. Canton trailed 6-5 after the first quarter but led 13-0 at halftime and was in a 19-19 tie after the third. Canton had a 16-9 scoring advantage in the fourth. Canton had 12 points and seven rebounds from Taylor Hunley.

 

Laurel Jacqmain was 5-of-15 from the floor but 8-of-8 from the free-throw line to lead Saginaw Nouvel to a 47-35 win over Gobles on Thursday in Class C girls basketball semifinal action at Michigan State. Gobles had been undefeated and fell to 26-1 while Nouvel goes to the title game against St. Ignace with a 21-4 record. Nouvel had quarter leads of 13-10, 21-15 and 33-25 and outscored Gobles 14-10 in the fourth. 

 

Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart improved to 21-5 on Thursday and will go to Saturday’s Class D title game against undefeated Crystal Falls thanks to a 54-42 victory over Marine City Cardinal Mooney. Sacred Heart trailed after the first quarter 13-9 but led 27-20 at halftime, and 36-33 after the third quarter and outscored Cardinal Mooney 18-9 in the fourth. Riley Terwillier had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Irish while Sara Hansen had 16 points and Averi Gamble added 10 points and 10 rebounds. 

 

Only St. Ignace, 24-2, stands in the way of Saginaw Nouvel’s bid for a Class C girls basketball title. St. Ignace advanced to the title game Saturday with a 34-30 win over Grosse Pointe Woods Liggett on Thursday. St. Ignace led 5-2 after the first quarter, 19-12 at halftime and 28-19 after the third quarter. Kelley Wright had eight points for St. Ignace while Abbey Ostman had seven points. Emily Hinsman had 13 rebounds while Abbey Ostman had 12 boards.

 

Crystal Falls Forest Park is a perfect 26-0 and will try to make it 27-0 Saturday against Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart n the Class D state finals girls basketball game. Crystal Falls won its semifinal game Thursday over Athens 49-33. Crystal Falls trailed Athens 33-32 going into the third quarter. Forest Park outscored Athens 17-0 in the fourth. Alexis Gussert had 20 points and 11 rebounds for Crystal Falls.

 

The Basketball Coaches Association has announced that Jess Walter of Midland High has finished second in the Miss Basketball voting behind Lexi Gussert of Crystal Falls Forest Park. Walter averaged 17.7 points, 6.3 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game for Midland and is playing at Indiana next season. Freeland’s Tori Jankoska, now at Michigan State, won the 2013 Miss Basketball award.
