Cedar Springs defeated Greenville 4-3 late last week in baseball action. Kaleb Vinton took the loss. He struck out eight batters and walked one.

 

Montabella’s baseball team scored a pair of wins over Evart 8-6 and 15-11 last week. Brady Burggren was the winning pitcher in both games. Chase Murray had two hits in the first game and three hits in the second. Pete Taylor and Brady Burggren also had three hits in the second game.

 

Belding’s baseball team lost 9-2 to Comstock Park in baseball action late last week and fell to 1-7 overall and 1-5 in the O-K Blue. Belding had six hits with three from Neil McCully.

 

Ithaca track coach Kason Marcy graduated 13 seniors from last years squad and will have a lot of freshmen and first-time runners. But Marcy is still optimistic with the likes of Blake Reyes in the long jump and sprints, Bryan Shaw in the sprints, John Lambrecht in the distance and Derian Loentz in the high jump and sprints.

Mark Posey is coaching the Big Rapids golf team for another season. Brad Wailling, a junior, averaged 85 last season, and leads the BR attack.

 

We will be average. We are a young team with a lot of players that need time to grow,” Posey said. “It depends on how hard the young players want to work on their short game and think their way around the course.”

Okemos boys varsity golf coach Dan Stolz is in his fifth season and his top players will be junior Ross Lazar and sophomore Chand Rajendra-Nicolucci.

“We’re a young team with solid players, nice kids, great attitudes and will continue to improve as the season progresses,” Stolz said,

Charlie Furney coaches the Lansing Catholic golf team and expects his squad to go after another title. Returning players, and their nine-hole average from last year include 

Brent Marshall (38.3), Niko Voutsaras (40.7), Joey Jurkovic (41.6) and Adam Elias are LC’s top returning players and all four played in the Division III State Finals in 2013.

 

“ I expect my team to compete for another Division III State Championship in 2014.” Furney said.

Fowler’s golf team, coached by Dan Bengal, will be led by Austin Feldpausch and Derek Bengel who averaged 39.5 and 40.5 for nine holes last season.

 

We will be better than average because of those players, but will not be as strong as the previous three years,” Dan Bengal said.

Coach Tim Drumhiller has major hopes for his Saginaw Nouvel golf team this season. Nick Ludka, who averaged 75 for nine holes and was All State last year, Hugh Lefevre at 84 and James Fabiano at 84 are among the key golfers for the Panthers.

 

“We have very high hopes,” Drumhiller said. “We finished runner-up at states last year in Division 4 and lost only one player. We need stronger contributions from our 3 to 5 players. We need to get off to a good start due to bad weather and shorter season.”

East Lansing lacrosse coach Mark Foster is looking for his team to make a move in the conference this season.

Top players for East Lansing this season are: Grant Brogan, TQ Hoban, Blake Ross, Jacob Hunter and Brian Edmiston.

“We are aiming to finish in the top half of our conference,” Foster said, adding that the key to success will be “finding players who will put the ball in the back of the net and having some new players accelerate their learning and become, not survivors, but thrivers on the game field.”
