Carson City-Crystal was third at the Ovid-Elsie Invitational last week. Tyler Craig was in the 3,200-meters at 10:18.5 and was third in the 1,600-meter run. He was a member of the fifth-place 3,200-meter relay team at 10:00.57.

Montabella’s boys track team was second in the small-school division of the Webberville Invitational Saturday with 47 points. Jonny Durham and Zach Taubitiz tied for first in the pole vault at 11-0. Durham threw the discus 117-6 for first place.
Alma tied Ovid-Elsie 4-4 in girl tennis action on Friday. Alma prevailed at three singles spots with Isabella Rivera prevailing at No. 1, Maddie Wert winning at No. 3 and Hayley Tessman taking honors at No. 4. Jamie Dueby and Kassy Vogel at No. 1 doubles had a 6-4, 6-4 victory for Alma.
Ovid-Elsie ties Alma 4-4 in girls tennis action on Friday. Emma Phillipson edged to a dramatic victory in No. 2 singles 5-7, 6-6(11-9), 19-17. Ovid-Elsie won in the final three singles classes with Kayla Duckert and Shyler Stehilk prevailing at No. 2, Hayley Ade and Shelby Frink at No. 3 and Natalee Whitford and Joely Johnson at No. 4.
“All the players should be very proud of themselves,” said Ovid Elsie coach Miriah Lintemuth. “They worked hard and we tied with Alma. Emma Phillipson lost the first set, won the second set in a tiebreaker 11-9 and it started to rain so the coaches decided the players would play an ultimate tiebreak going to 10 but have to win by two. Emma won the ultimate tiebreaker 19-17. Shelby Frink also had the chance to play four singles and she won the first set in a tiebreaker 7-3 and lost the last two sets 4-6 and 1-6. This was her first time playing singles.”
Greenville swept Tri County last week 9-8 and Sault Ste Marie 12-1 in tournament action last week. Nikota Howe was the winning pitcher in the first game. Sarah Newhouse and Howe had three hits apiece. Elizabeth Niemiec had three RBIs. Niemiec had three hits including a homer.
Central Montcalm swept Alma 16-0 and 10-0 in softball action last Saturday. Saydee Rowland had a no-hitter n the opener. Hannah Christensen had three hits.
Rockford’s golf team defeated Grand Haven 152-174 at Silver Lake Country Club last week. Joel Pietila had a 36, followed by Michael Cooper at 38, AJ Varekois at 39, Kevin Kamis at 39, and Meuser and Josh Stephan at 42.

Tim Simpson is coaching a Lansing Catholic girls squad that has plenty of talent. Erin Fields is in the high jump and sprints, Mary Delaney in the distance, Haley Fischman in the throws, Anne Marie Dunneback in the mid-distance and Amy Hicks and Jo Brown in the distances. “I expect us to be middle of the pack in our league,” Simpson said, adding that the key to his team’s success is “Fischman being one of the best throwers in the league and region, Fields long jumping and high jumping like she has in prior years and our distance girls in the 4×800 relay.”
Tim Simpson is coaching a Lansing Catholic boys track and field team that could be a state power this season. Top athletes on the team include Keenan Rebera in the distance, Bronson Russell in the sprints, Jack Peters in the long jump, 300 hurdles and relays, Moses Kone in the sprints, Nick Peters in the long jump and sprints and Jeffery Lorencen in the distances. “I expect that we will be in the top five teams at the state finals,” Simpson said. “We have been in the top 10 the last three years and won the championship in 2012.”
