Vestaburg at Morrice
| Montabella Varsity volleyball traveled to Ashley for their final in season game. They struggled in the first set to get passes up, but fought back hard in the final three sets to win the game. Girls started moving, communicating, and encouraging each other. We were able to run some different things as our passes got to target and were reading the court very well. The team together had 97 serves, 21 aces, 102 hits, and 50 kills/tips!

Portland St. Patrick improved to 7-1 with Friday’s 20-8 win over Farwell, which fell to 1-6.
St. Patrick scored on Shane Cook’s 26-yard pass to Lucas Simon. Cook also had a 77-yard punt return for a touchdown. Simon also had a 2-yard TD run.
Payton Russman rushed for 119 yards.
Braxton Teachworth had 14 tackles for St. Patrick.

Following are rankings of high school football teams in the High School Sports Scene Magazine primary coverage area.
DIVISION 1
ROCKFORD 3-0: Enter rugged two-game stretch of the schedule with Grandville and Hudsonville coming up.
GRAND LEDGE 3-0: Comets off to their best start since 2015 season thanks to a potent offense that has scored five or more touchdowns in each game.
HOLT 2-1: Rams face a major test this Friday as they take on DeWitt.
DIVISION 2
MIDLAND DOW 2-1: Came up just four points short against Grand Blanc. Face off with undefeated Mt. Pleasant this Friday.
EAST LANSING 1-2: Trojans have faced a rugged schedule so far this season and things are not any easier this week with 2-1 Portage Central in the way.
SAGINAW HERITAGE 2-1: Hawks suffered first loss of the season against Lapeer and now must face undefeated Bay City Western.
DIVISION 3
DEWITT 2-1: Bounced back from Portland loss in a big way with an impressive win against a quality East Lansing squad.
MOUNT PLEASANT 3-0: Oilers have a tough two-week stretch coming up with games against Dow and Midland.
BAY CITY WESTERN 3-0: Western puts it undefeated record on the line against a Saginaw Heritage team that is looking to rebound after a tough loss to Lapeer.
MASON 2-1: Rebounded from a tough loss to Holt by defeating league rival Williamston. Bulldogs face 2-1 Haslett this Friday.
DIVISION 4
CHARLOTTE 3-0: The last time Charlotte started the season with a 3-0 mark was in 2004 when the Orioles eventually reached the state semifinals in Division 3.
ALMA 2-1: Rebounded from a tough loss to Freeland with an impressive win against a previously undefeated Bay City Glenn squad.
BAY CITY GLENN 2-1: Face a massive challenge this week in a Frankenmuth squad that is beginning to roll on offense.
WILLIAMSTON 1-2: Hornets take on a tough Fowlerville squad as they look to snap a two-game skid.
DIVISION 5
PORTLAND 3-0: No letdown for the Raiders who came up with a solid win against Ionia after the emotional win against DeWitt in week two.
LANSING CATHOLIC 3-0: Cougar offense is starting to hit on all cylinders.
FRANKENMUTH 3-0: Eagles take on John Glenn this Friday with the showdown against Freeland coming up in week five.
FREELAND 3-0: It’s showdown time in the Tri-Valley as unbeatens Freeland and Essexville-Garber clash this Friday.
ESSEXVILLE-GARBER 3-0: Undefeated Dukes face a major challenge as they put their undefeated record on the line against Freeland.
GLADWIN 3-0: Flying G’s have looked dominant this season winning their first three games by a combined score of 180-0.
OVID-ELSIE 2-1: Marauders are for real with an impressive win against Montrose and a tough seven-point loss to Portland on their ledger.
BULLOCK CREEK 2-1: Lancers looking to get back on track after a tough loss against Standish-Sterling.
DIVISION 6
MILLINGTON 3-0: Cardinals face a major hurdle this week as it takes on undefeated Standish-Sterling.
MONTROSE 2-1: Ram must quickly regroup from tough loss to Ovid-Elsie as undefeated rival Chesaning provides another big challenge this week.

Okemos volleyball coach Jamie Ianni’s volleyball team was 15-6 last year and 3-2 in the league for second place, but the highlight, considering the various COVID 19 restrictions, was being able to have a season.
“We graduated three starters with Chloe Krumm (setter), Lily Gorman (middle) and Niya Patel (opposite hitter),” Ianni said. “They were all valued players and teammates.”
This year’s team will be led by returning starters Taylor Stephens, Kayla Ozanich, Bethany Hartman, Sarah Hamel and Ella Woodward.
Stephens is a junior hitter, Kayla Ozanich a junior middle blocker, Hartman a senior outside hitter, Hamel a senior defensive specialist and Woodward, a senior libero.
Other contributor will be Ali Pignataro, a junior setter; Kennedi North, a junior middle; Mia Mardsen, a sophomore opposite and Sue Flores, a junior outside hitter.
“We are striving to meet our goal of winning a league and district championship,” Ianni said, adding that strengths “will be passing and serving which will result in a strong offense.”
Ianni is confident of having a league contender.
“Dewitt and Grand Ledge are very strong this fall and all three of our programs will be challenging for a conference championship,” Ianni said. “Just knowing what our schedule and routine is for the girls and parents has been such a relief. It has been easier to navigate practice without worrying about temperatures and COVID forms; however we are still wearing masks in our district.”
