Today the Eagle Cross Country teams traveled to Spring Hill Camp in Evart to compete in the 28 team Evart Invitational. All teams competed in one race but were separated by small school and large school divisions.

The boys team finished 3rd in the small school division and 6th overall. Medaling for the Eagles were Deegan Bodell (14th), Carter Clark (15th), and Brayden Clark (18th). Rounding out the top 7 were Oisin O’Grady (32nd), Kristian Coon (34th), Jacob Stevens (39th) and Cole Halfman (44th) Hayden Jason (61st), and Aiden Weber (71st) also had good races for the Eagles.

The girls team finished 11th of 13 schools in the small school division. Mary Beth Hyatt finished 31st, followed by Emma McCarty (41st) and Lily Martin (57th).

“Everyone competed very well today. The course was the toughest they will face all year and they all raced well on a tough course. The boys did well against the 7th ranked team in the state and were the 2nd D4 school out of 28 schools who competed. The girls also competed well and both teams are gearing up for the first MSAC meet this coming Wednesday.”

Next meet for the Eagles is on Wednesday, September 21st, Lake of Dreams campground in Merrill.

The Midland Dow high varsity boys tennis team improved to 19-0-1 after besting Grosse Pointe North 8-0, Portage Central 8-0, and No. 7 Okemos 7-1 Saturday in the Sunsational Saturday Quad.
Dow next plays at Saginaw Heritage on Tuesday and home against Davison on Thursday to finish up the SVL regular season.
Coach Terry Schwartzkopf: “The boys just continue to roll. Nimai took a tough defeat today, but all that can do is make us better. Every outcome, good or bad, is a chance to improve ourselves and increase both mental toughness and strategy. He will be ready come states. They all will be. Juan and I truly believe these guys can win states if every flight was unseeded because EACH of them is the best in the state at their flight in D2. Seeds just make the path a little easier. I am proud to stand behind this team and honored to be their coach. They continue to impress me as both tennis players and young men.”

There was a storm delay in Freeland to start the day, canceling the JV match. A second storm came through at 7pm though– in the form of Frankenmuth soccer. As in the past, it was a physical battle from the kickoff. There were over 25 fouls whistled in the game, along with a host of yellow cards. The teams battled back and forth, until in the 20th minute, senior Evan Baker sent a dime across the face of the goal to the foot of freshman Braeden Mossner. The Eagle defense continued to hold steady, despite the onslaught of dump and chase balls that Freeland sent through. In the 33rd minute, however, Freeland was able to convert on a through ball that made it to the foot of their speedy striker, resulting in a 1v1 breakaway against the stalwart Muth keeper Austin Hergenreder. Both teams went into the half with the score knotted at 1.

Dow improved to 13-0-1 on the year after besting Mt Pleasant 8-0 without dropping a game. Dow next plays Wednesday vs Flushing, UDJ, and Forest Hills Central.

“Kids did great today. Austin scored a golden set which hasn’t happened, to my recollection, since Michael Szabo played. It was a good day and great warm up for tomorrow. It was also a pleasure to see LaPoe move from player to coach and take over the program. It is already almost twice the size as last year and I attribute that to his dedication and love of the game. It is really awesome to see.”

In the final match of the night, the Eagles faced Clare and won in 2 sets to go undefeated for the night.  Audrey Geer again led the team in kills with 9, followed by Lexi Boyke with 5 and Julia Rodriguez and Madison Geer with 3 each.  Audrey had 4 aces, and Kendall Thompson and Hanna Reinhardt had 2 each.  Kendall Thompson took over setting duties after Sarah Hauck went down with an ankle injury, and earned 12 assists.  Hannah Reinhardt led the team with 8 digs, and Audrey followed with 7.  Muth hosts John Glenn in their first conference game of the season this Wednesday September 14th with the Freshman and JV playing at 5pm and Varsity to follow.  The Eagles are 18-1 heading in to conference play.
