The Montabella Mustangs played their first home game of the season and brought the energy and intensity right from the start as they hosted the Wolverines of Vestaburg and won 46-32. The Mustangs jumped to an early lead at the end of the first by a score of 15-7, but the Wolverines kept the margin at 8 points going into the half. The Mustangs cranked up the defensive energy and execution even more in the third quarter only allowing 3 points as they expanded the lead entering the fourth. The final quarter continued to be a physical battle in which the Mustangs stayed focused and continued to keep the Wolverines at bay. Leading to a final score, Mustangs 46, Wolverines 32.
JT Smith led all scorers on the night with 20 points and also pulled in 8 rebounds, 3 steals, and 4 assists. Keegan Ferguson recorded a double double on the night with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Chase Burggren added to the Mustang firepower and toughness, making two 3’s while playing tough all night. Caleb Theisen and Dakota Dykhuis spearheaded the Mustang defense, causing deflections, recording steals, and wreaking havoc on the opposing teams ball handlers.
The Mustangs are now 2-1 on the season as well as in conference play. Their next contest is at Breckenridge Monday, JV tip is 6pm.
