The Frankenmuth Eagles Football Team defeated the Corunna Cavaliers 56 – 14 to capture the Division 5 District Championship.
The District Championship is the third in the last four years for the Eagle program. The Eagles scored early and often with Cole Lindow scoring twice in the first four minutes of the game on 12 and 4 yard runs and the Eagles jumped out to a quick 14 – 0 lead. Eagle QB Davin Reif followed up with two 1st quarter scores of his own in the opening quarter on 10 and 2 yard TD runs and the Eagles took a commanding 28 – 0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Early in the 2nd quarter, Cole Jankowski got into the scoring action with 12 yard scamper and Ryan Brenner added the PAT which was one of eight for the game.
Corunna got on the scoreboard at the 6:46 mark of the 2nd quarter on a 20-yard TD pass form Jaden Herrick to Nick Steinacker. Reif added a 3 yard run and a two TD passes to Ethan Jacobs of 38 and 25 yards, with the latter score with no time remaining in the half. Frankenmuth took a 56 – 7 lead into halftime. The lone 2nd half score was a Hunter McCorkle to Steinacker 22 yard passing score for the Cavaliers. The offense was humming in the 1st half with 415 yards of offense, ending the game with 475 total yards. The offense tallied 19 first downs to Corunna’s 9 first downs. The Eagle rushing attack was led by Daniel Barger with 109 yards and Lindow with 106 yards. Reif was 3 of 4 passing for 82 yards.
The defense was led by Konnor Roche’s seven tackles and followed by Jake Andrews and Colton Zehnder with six tackles. The defense held Corunna to a minus 10 yards rushing. Ben Reinert was also credited with three QB sacks. The Eagles will move on to the Regional Championship next week against Marine City which defeated Detroit Denby 30-0.
