Ithaca’s boys track and field squad celebrated a Division 3 title with a brilliant performance at Saturday’s championship meet at Jenison High School.
It wasn’t easy with the Yellowjackets winning with 45 points and defeating Pewamo-Wesphalia and Saugatuck by the narrowest of margins, as both had 44 points. Harbor Springs was fourth with 43 points.
Three athletes garnered all the points
The Yellowjackets needed every point they could muster to claim the title. Ransom Allen picked up 18 points by taking first in the 3,200-meter run (9:19.70) and second in the 1,600-meter run (4:15.63). Alex VanDeWeghe picked up 10 points in the shot put (55-9) for first place and Baylee Chaffin added five points by taking fourth (53-9.75). Chaffin was also second in the discus (161-1) and VanDeWeghe fifth (154-3).
Ithaca’s performance came two weeks after the Jackets won the school’s first regional title since 1947.
