The Cardinals traveled to Ludington on Friday to take part in the Lakes 8 Conference tournament. They came away with a 3rd place result. “I was really pleased with how our team played today. Every flight had at least one win. Our singles lineup really stepped up their game with two conference champions and one finalist”.
Ludington took first place in both regular season play and the tournament. In regular season play the Cardinals finished in a tie for 2nd place with Muskegon Catholic Central. The tournament results tipped the final standings in MCC’s favor. “We were missing half of our #1 doubles pair. They would have been the one seed so this put us in a bind for that flight”.
Eden Short finished as conference champion in the #1 singles slot. “Eden was the most dominant player in the conference this season. In her 5 regular season matches she lost a total of three games. She also only gave up three games in her tournament matches”.
At #2 singles, Brooke Hojnacki earned a conference championship. In a tight final against Ludington she prevailed 7-5, 6-4. “Brooke really stepped up her game during the final. This was the best match I have seen her play in her 4 years on the team. She was down 4-5 in the first set and 3-4 in the second. She was able to grind and won the last three games of each set. Many of the points had 20-30 shot rallies with both players hitting hard and moving the ball around.”
Emily Mathewson earned second team All-Conference honors by making the final at #4 singles. “Emily had a tremendous amount of growth in her freshman season. In her first match of the year she lost to the Ludington player 0&0. In the conference championship she pushed her to 6-3, 6-4”.
The Cardinals travel to Mount Pleasant on Tuesday for their final regular season match. Their D4 Regional is Friday at Traverse City St. Francis.
