The Midland Dow High Chargers swept a doubleheader from Alpena to open the 2019 season.
In game 1, the Chargers scored 7 runs in the bottom of the 6th to finish a 12-2 win. Senior Lane Peters pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up 2 unearned runs on 6 Hits while striking out 5 to pick up the win on the mound. Sophomore Trent Johnson came in relief pitching the 1 2/3 innings of shutout baseball striking giving up 1 hit striking out 3. The Chargers were led offensively by Senior Dexter Guentensberger who went 2 for 4 with a triple and a double and 2 RBI. Senior Jake Stone picked up a big hit in the 6th inning driving in 2 runs.
In game 2, Dow jumped out to an early lead to beat Alpena 5-2 in a shortened 5 inning contest that was called due to darkness. Senior Jake Stone scattered 5 hits and gave up no runs with a some great defense played behind him. Stone struck out 5 with no BB. Senior Kyle Brennan pitched the final 2 innings to pick up the save. He gave up 2 earned runs on 1 hit while striking out 5. On the offensive side, the Chargers were led by Junior Austin Ieuter who was 3 for 3 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Senior Michael Erickson doubled in a run in the bottom of 4th to complete the scoring for the Chargers.
Midland Dow is 2-0 and will travel to play Essexville Garber on Wednesday in a doubleheader.
