Alexa Walker will leave some large goalkeeper shoes for Freeland to fill next year.
Walker was the senior goaltender for the Falcons in 2018 and led the team to a state runner-up finish. The Falcons barely lost in the title game, 2-1 to Flint Powers.
Walker was the No. 1 goalie for Freeland the last three years. She considers this season to have been her best.
“I put in a lot of time,” she said. “I worked on my game from last year. My goal for the Flint Powers game was to (improve) from last year. I practiced as hard as I could to perfect my skills.”
Freeland had lost to Powers 4-0 in the 2017 title game.
“I do pretty well on my communication,” Walker said.
Despite the loss in the final, Walker was pleased with her team’s effort in the title match.
“I thought the game went extremely well with everything we had worked on and practiced on for the entire year,” Walker said. “It all came into place. It was amazing. It was a bummer we didn’t win. At the end of the day, it was amazing how we did. We ended 2-1 instead of 4-0 last year.”
Walker has been playing soccer since she was 4 years old.
Soccer was her only sport at Freeland.
“I’m going to Grand Valley and will try out for their club (and intercollegiate) team,” Walker said.
