DETROIT — Ky’ren Cunningham definitely had the flair for the dramatic on the big stage.
Cunningham hauled in an 18-yard touchdown pass from Caden Prieskorn with four seconds left that gave 10th-ranked Orchard Lake St. Mary’s a 29-28 victory over top-ranked Muskegon in the Division 3 state finals Nov. 26 at Ford Field.
Muskegon (13-1) led 14-13 at the half. The second half saw five lead changes.
Ben Free booted field goals of 32, 35 and 49 yards — the latter an MHSAA state finals record that gave OLSM (10-4) a 23-21 lead with 4:47 to play.
La’Darius Jefferson’s 3-yard run put Muskegon back on top at 28-23 with 1:55 left. The Big Reds could not stop St. Mary’s final drive.
Kalil Pimpleton added a pair of 18-yard scoring runs, while Jefferson added a 4-yard sprint for Muskegon’s other touchdown.
Prieskorn recorded a 1-yard plunge and connected with Clay Antishin for a 30-yard scoring toss for St. Mary’s, which captured its third straight state crown and made its seventh appearance in the finals in the past decade.
Rashawn Allen led St Mary’s with 145 rushing yards on 25 carries. Prieskorn finished 13-for-21 passing for 200 yards and Antishin had six catches for 103 yards for the Eaglets.
Jefferson had 64 yards on 13 carries and Pimpleton added 64 yards on nine rushes for Muskegon.
