The Vestaburg boys basketball team has had an impressive regular season, but the Wolverines are also hoping to make some noise in upcoming weeks.

Coached by Todd Halcomb, the team is 11-2 overall and 7-0 in the Mid-State Activities Conference.

“I’m pretty satisfied with the season,” Halcomb said. “We’re making progress where we need to make progress. Right now we’re going through a bugaboo with injuries where we’re trying to get everyone healthy from either being sick or out with concussions, sprained ankles and those things.

“We’re down right now two to three starters, but we have depth where we can fill in for those guys, which makes me happy. Overall, I’m satisfied with the kids and the improvement they’ve made. We’re getting better guard play than what we’ve been getting and our post play is solid.”

Colin Dove leads the Wolverines in scoring while guard Christian Keeler has been topping the rebounding stats in recent games. Seth Stratton, a sophomore guard, was a leading scorer in another recent game. Alex Steed has played solid as a senior and contributed double figures in rebounds and points.

“Our overall ability and the length we have defensively,” are among the strengths his team has, Halcomb added. “We’re long and we’re very quick up front with our guards. Our two big guys are really long inside with long arms. A couple of our guards have long arms that are hard to shoot over. We’re pretty athletic. We have some kids that are learning how to be basketball players. That’s where we’re making our greatest improvement so far. That makes us tough.

“We move fairly well. Now that they understand the game better, and the concepts, it’s making us a better team overall.”

The Wolverines will finish the regular season at Carson City-Crystal with the potential to  the Mid-State Activities Conference title on the line.

For the first time in seven years, Vestaburg will compete in the Class D districts rather than Class C.

“If things go right and we play right, we could make a nice run,” Halcomb said. “We also know that if we don’t do things right we could be done the first night like we were last year. But the potential is there for us to have a long run. We’re also in one of the toughest districts in the state with Fulton, Fowler, St. Patrick and Ashley.”
