St. Louis basketball coach Daniel Nealy and his team of Sharks have been enjoying an impressive season despite battling various ups and downs.

A major highlight was a 54-44 win over Class D power Vestaburg, a team that has had a strong season.

Prior to a 62-41 loss to Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary on Feb. 19, the Sharks had won four of their previous five games with a 54-49 loss to Merrill being the only blemish during that stretch.

Going into the final two weeks, the Sharks were 8-8 overall.

“We beat Vestaburg, who at the time was undefeated,” Nealy said. “We’ve struggled some, but we’ve made big improvements from where the program has been.”

The scoring leadership has been back and forth between Seth Bebow and Alex Garza. Bebow has been leading in rebounds and is top two in scoring on the team. Garza is usually in the top two in scoring.

“When we’re playing well, we’re playing good intense defense,” Nealy said. “We can run and we can hit shots.”

The Sharks are looking to end the regular season strong and become a district title contender.

“We just need to get stops and rebounding,” Nealy said. “We’ve struggled with rebounding lately. It’s all about stops for us.”
