John Bunting is coaching a Mount Pleasant girls soccer team that includes senior Hannah Kahn, who has committed to Western Michigan University.
She signed a letter on Feb. 3.
“She was kind of up in the air,” said Bunting. “Her big sister (Emma) plays at Western, so I think it’s something she’s kind of wanted to do. But she’s been looking at other options and they did not offer a scholarship. She’s just committed to walk on at this point. She decided it was a good fit for her sister and it’s a good fit for herself as well.”
Hannah, an offensive midfielder, will be a senior team member for the Oilers this spring.
“She’s played for me three years and has done a wonderful job,” Bunting said.
“Her role has changed and developed over time. The last couple of years, she definitely has taken on as being a goal scorer and contributing a lot of the offense with assisting and things like that. She’s a good leader for the love of the game and hustle and drive as well.
“Kahn had foot surgery her sophomore year and played but didn’t have a tremendous season because she was still recovering from that,” Bunting said. “Last year, she still had an ankle injury that kind of plagued herself. She has not gotten her fair looks because she has not been 100 percent for the last couple of years. I think she was waiting out. But at the same time, Western was intriguing enough to her that she wanted to make that commitment.”
Bunting expects a healthy Hannah Kahn to be a productive player this spring.
Hannah and Emma, “are similar in a lot of ways,” Bunting said. “Her sister has evolved in a different kind of a role for Western, more of an outside forward attacker.”
