A new attitude helped the Farwell competitive cheer team set a new school record when the school hosted the New Year’s Cheer event in January.
State-ranked Houghton Lake finished first among the Division 4 teams on hand, with a total of 707 points.
Right behind were the Eagles with a 692 that had never been seen before.
“We’ve been steadily improving all season,” said Farwell coach Taylor Bryant. “We were in the 500s at our first event, and now we’re almost up to 700, which puts us near Houghton Lake, which is No. 9 in the state.
“Our girls are all looking good, and they do a good job getting prepared every week. This is the most talented team that has ever come through here. They are driven to win, and they are finally ready to win.”
Farwell has 16 girls on the squad, which is led by seniors Michelle Boyd, Jamee Van Sicklen, and Reagan Douglas, sophomores Brooke Pritchard and Morgan Nestor and freshman Brianna McQuiston.
“These girls are very good gymnastically,” said Bryant. “They are tumbling-talented and they work hard at it.”
Meridian finished third at the event with 663.98.
Harrison competed in Division 3 and placed third with 632.26.
The next major local cheer event will be Cheer On The Lake at Houghton Lake on Feb. 13.
