Breckenridge won the competitive cheer district, regional, and Division 4 state titles last season, and co-coach Deb Gaines, who has won eight state crowns in her 30-plus seasons, is not shy about her expectations for this season. “Repeat last year’s accomplishments through hard work, focus, and determination,” she said. “All 18 team members will be instrumental in the team’s success. Sophomore Kasey Conn will be leading the way again this year with her tumbling and overall athletic skills for the team. She will be assisted by many others, as well, throughout the rounds.”
The Huskies should be strong in Rounds 1 and 3 and will look to improve in Round 2. “We are hoping to bring back the aerial cartwheel to Round 2, which is a skill that we have been working on and have done in the past years prior to 2008,” she said.
It will be one of the largest teams Breckenridge has had in several years, with 16 girls set to compete in rounds 1 and 3, Gaines said.
“The girls have been working hard and are focused to make another great run at the state title,” she continued. “We will be using our season to improve our rounds to ensure that we have the very best material and strength on the mat when it’s tournament time. My co-coach [daughter Jenna Graham] is responsible for our choreography, and it is always top of the line. Together, we cover the areas that we feel need attention to help our team reach its highest potential.
“Our team is very receptive to what needs to be done in order to achieve this goal, and our parents are very supportive to our needs, as well, and are constantly behind us. These key ingredients will make for a winning combination throughout the entire season, no matter the outcome.”
