Detroit Martin Luther King stunned Lowell with a 40-yard touchdown pass on the last play of the game for a 40-38 Division 2 state championship at Ford Field on Friday.
Lowell enjoyed a 38-34 lead with 37 seconds to play and Martin Luther King had the ball at the 3-yard line. Armandi Posey had four pass completions on a 97-yard drive, including one with no time left to Donnie Conley for 40 yards. Conley caught the pass in the corner of the end zone and was just in bounds.
Lowell had a 31-13 lead early in the fourth quarter. Max Dean had touchdown runs of 1, 3 and 34 yards for the Arrows while Ryan Stevens scored on 4 and 2-yard runs. George Gonzales had a field goal for Lowell (12-2).
It’s only the second time in state football finals history that a title game has been decided on the last play.
