Girls’ Tennis Player of the Year

Sara Daavettila, a Williamston junior, captured her second straight Division 3 girls’ tennis state championship in June with a clean 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Detroit Country Day’s Sasha Hartje.

Daavettila went all season without dropping a set and has now won 295 straight games, dating back to 2014. She finished the high school season 24-0.

She ranks 15th in the country according to the United States Tennis Association, and she travels the country regularly to play in tournaments. She finished first at the USTA’s 18-under National Selection Tournament and also played in the U.S. Open qualifier held in Midland

The 17-year-old has already committed to the University of North Carolina, which is considered to have one of the top tennis programs in the country.

 

Boys’ Golfer of the Year

Owen Beyer

DeWitt High School

Senior Owen Beyer helped DeWitt win the Division 2 state championship in 2015.

The Sports Scene Boys Golfer of the Year opened the state tournament with a five-under-par 67 at Michigan State University’s Forest Akers East Golf Course  and went on to finish third individually after a 75 on the second day. As a team, DeWitt beat Cranbrook by one stroke for the state championship.

Beyer averaged 76.3 strokes for 18-hole events this spring and 37.7 for nine-hole rounds. The all-state selection took first at the CAAC Red tournament in a field that included Michigan State commit Zach Rosendale and Dream Teamer Eric Nunn and was in the top three in the district tournament on the way to the state final.

Beyer will golf collegiately at Northern Michigan University.
