Led by standout senior Karrigan Smith, the St. Johns girls track team brought home the Division 2 state track and field championship. The Redwings totaled 36 points to edge Flint Southwestern by two points.
“I told them two days ago that if things go well, we’re seeded five points behind the leader coming in,” said St. Johns coach Neil Feldpausch. “I told them we have a shot of getting a banner, state runner-up, and if things go real well, a state championship.”
Smith led the way, as she won the 1600-meter run and placed third in the 800. “I was very excited about how the whole day went,” she said. “It made all the hard work we put in over the season worth it.”
The Redwings relied on a team effort to earn the win, as three of their relay teams placed in the top five. The 4×800 relay team of Jen Eaton, Madison Maloney, Milah Montle, and Smith placed second, as did the 4×400 relay team of Lyndsay Pung, Emily Wohlfert, Smith, and Pauline Carbonelle. The 4×200 relay team of Anna Krumm, Wohlfert, Pung, and Carbonelle took fifth.
