Hello sports fans. It’s another great day at Sports Scene.

With every passing season, it gets harder to say goodbye to all the fine young men and women you watch grow up before your eyes on the pages of Sports Scene. With each passing season, you think that you will probably never see those types of athletes again in your lifetime. Names like Tori Jankoska, Travis Smith, Maurice Jones, Matt Costello, Josh Jackson, Taylor Massa, Angus Arthur, Gabe Dean, Rachel McInerney, Denzel Valentine, and Ben Braden, just to name a few.

Although we will witness many feats in the future,  I’ve come to the realization that what Swan Valley’s Alex Grace was able to accomplish in his three-plus years as a Viking will likely never be repeated in my lifetime.

Grace owns the state single-season rushing record, with 2,962 yards as a junior. He finished with 7,551 yards in his career, the third most in state history but the most for a three-year varsity player.

The 6-foot-1-inch, 210-pound tailback also owns another state record, with eight consecutive 200-yard games. He finished with 23 consecutive 100-yard games.

His physical  achievements are simply amazing, and what a great kid! Alex Grace is a true student-athlete. One of the greats on the field of play, but he also gets the job in the classroom. Watching Grace run was art in the making. His speed, skill, and heart are things you can’t teach.

It was a fun ride, Alex. I hate to see it end. But next up is Western Michigan University and, hopefully, an opporunity to put a dent in the Broncos’ record books.

Also, I would like to congratulate Ithaca’s Travis Smith for deciding to return home and play his college football at Eastern Michigan University. It’s going to be fun watching these two kids at the next level.

Finally, the Arthur Hill High School family lost one of its own, as officer Jerome Scott died the day after Thanksgiving of a heart attack. Scott was an influence on the students at Arthur Hill and at Saginaw High for over two decades. The man with the big smile will be missed.
