Michigan got the better of the Chicago area, sweeping all three games at Saturday’s Muskegon’s Basketball Showcase at historic Redmond-Potter Gymnasium.
The exclamation point came in the finale of the triple-header, as Muskegon High’s 6-10 senior Mr. Basketball candidate and Michigan State commit Deyonta Davis scored a game-high 27 points with 20 rebounds and five blocked shots as the host Big Reds rolled to a 71-61 victory over Chicago Curie.
Michael Littlejohn (11 points) was the only other player in double figures for Muskegon (4-1), the defending Class A state champions who bounced back after their 31-game winning streak was snapped on Tuesday against East Kentwood. Joeviair Kennedy scored seven points with 11 rebounds.
Joshua Stamps scored 16 points to lead Curie (8-3). Allonte Pickens scored 13 points and Devin Gage added 12.
In the opener, the 1-2 punch of 6-7 sophomore Isaiah Livers (18 points) and 6-5 junior Devon Daniels (16 points) led a young, impressive and unbeaten Kalamazoo Central team to a 65-58 victory over Thea Bowman Academy out of Gary, Ind.
The Maroon Giants (6-0) used a balanced attack with two others in double figures -Hunter Hale with 13 and Orlando Little with 11.
Thea Bowman, which made a game of it with a 28-12 scoring edge in the fourth quarter, was led by Jaylen Williams with 13 points and Martin Schiele with 12 points.
In Game 2, Saginaw Arthur Hill got 22 points from 6-3 senior and University of Texas commit in a 70-53 victory over Chicago Vocational.
Brian Bowen, a 6-7 sophomore, added 15 points and 6-4 sophomore Willie Rodgers scored 13. Chicago Vocational was led by Jakob Barker with 14 points and Keeshawn Palmer with 11.
