Sometimes plans change, and that can be a very good thing.

Such is the case for the Alma College wrestling program this week, as head coach Todd Hibbs received a surprise message on Monday.

“I looked at my email and got a huge smile,” said Hibbs. “We had been issued a late invitation to compete in the National Dual Championships this weekend in Fort Wayne, Indiana.”

The National Duals are an event attended by 24 of the best NCAA Division III teams in the nation, as first through eighth place are honored on the final day of competition.

“They had a late slot open up and apparently the recent success that the guys had in Nashville impressed someone,” said Hibbs.

Indeed, the Scots have risen to #15 in the latest d3wrestle.com ranking as the team is 9-1 in NCAA Division III competition this year – with its only loss coming to the #1 team in the nation.

“We talked about our seniors getting the chance to wrestle in the best team event of the year, and we just had to make it happen,” said associate head coach Jeremiah Tobias. “It took a day of phone calls and changing a whole bunch of reservations – but in the end we are headed to the National Duals.”

Seedings for the event are forthcoming on Monday evening, and more information will be posted on the Scots Facebook page, webpage and Twitter account. Still, fans can turn to the following link for information on the event.
