Hey Sports Fans! It’s another great day here at Sports Scene.
When the Ithaca High School football team knocked off St. Charles for its 61st consecutive victory Sept. 26, it came to light that the Yellowjackets own the 18th spot all-time in the history of high school football for consecutive wins.
Let’s put this in perspective if we can. The state of Michigan’s record for consecutive wins, set by Hudson in the early 1970’s, is 72 victories in a row. On the national level, legendary football coach Bob Ladouceur, who took the De La Salle High School Spartans from obscurity to a 151-game winning streak, was recently depicted in the movie When the Game Stands Tall that hit movie theaters this summer.
The crazy thing about the consecutive winning streak for Ithaca is that it isn’t even halfway to the national mark, which is extremely mind-blowing. Ithaca would have to go undefeated for another eight seasons after the 2014 season to even come close to that mark.
Right now, let’s focus on keeping the longest streak in the nation rolling while keeping sights on the big prize, a fifth straight Division 6 title. Ithaca hasn’t missed a beat to start the season. The Yellowjackets have been tested in a few games this season but have shown resilience and determination that has allowed them to keep the streak alive and intact.
Keep up the great work Ithaca. Everyone at Sports Scene is rooting for you.
I also want to give a big shout out to Saginaw Arthur Hill’s Eric Davis for finally making it official, as he announced that he will be playing his college basketball at the University of Texas. I’m not going to lie – I would have loved to see him in green and white and playing for Michigan State University, or maybe even Kentucky, but it’s going to be fun watching him live his dreams. Eric made the right choice for himself and his family.
Exciting times await you, my friend. Relish in the moment because it’s an experience of a lifetime.
