Marvin Wright, Jr., running back at Everett High School, has a football coach, Marcelle Caruthers. But when the game and practice are over, he goes home to his first coach, former state champion at Saginaw Arthur Hill and defensive back at Michigan State University, his dad, Marvin Wright, Sr.
“I don’t feel pressure as some people think, because my dad played big-time college football,” said Wright, Jr. “Whenever I have questions, I have someone I live with who was coached by one of the greatest coaches of all time, in Nick Saban. When we’re watching a game, we pause it and rewind it, and he will ask me what I see.”
His dad is a dad first and a coach second. “I love watching Marvin play, but when it comes down to it, this is about me trying to help him be the best player he can be.”
With offers from Saginaw Valley State University and Grand Valley State University, Wright, Jr. and his dad are preparing themselves for the next level. “I’m not a college recruiter, so I can’t say whether or not he can play at the D-I level,” said Wright, Sr. “But I do know he can play at the next level, and it’s our job to find the best place for him.”
Hard work and determination are two things essential to getting to that next level and, according to Wright, Sr., Wright, Jr. has both of them. “During the summer, I didn’t have to wake him up and make sure he worked out,” said Wright, Sr. “That is what I like most about Marvin, that he is focused on putting in the work to succeed.”
