After missing the playoffs for the first time in five years last fall, St. Johns tight end Austin Ervin and his Redwings teammates are determined to make it back to postseason play this year.
Ervin, who stands 6-foot-5-inches tall and weighs 235 pounds, will have a big impact on the team’s playoff chances this year. One of the top tight ends in the state, he is a punishing blocker in St. Johns’ wing-T offense who also caught 17 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns last year.
Ervin has some specific goals he wants to accomplish in his final season at St. Johns. “Our team goals are to win the CAAC Red, make the playoffs, and to make a great run in the playoffs,” he said. “My individual goals for this season are to keep improving my blocking skills and to do whatever I can to help the team win.”
Ervin was busy during the off-season preparing for his final high school season. “I have gotten a lot stronger and quicker and have been eating a lot better to keep my body healthy and in shape,” he said. “Between the weight room and agility and flexibility workouts, I have worked out consistently four-five days a week in addition to our seven-on-seven schedule and my AAU basketball season.”
Ervin will have plenty of help as the Redwings strive for the postseason. “We have some guys like quarterback Blake Thelen, defensive tackle Jake Gnegy, offensive tackle Justin Hallead, running back Angus Arthur, and linebacker Tanner Motz who will surprise some people this season,” Ervin said.
After high school, Ervin will continue his career at Central Michigan University, as he committed to the Chippewas back in May. “CMU has always felt right for me,” he said. “I have been on campus many times over the years. I have extended family in Mt. Pleasant, and it really has been a second home for me. Plus, I have developed a great relationship with Coach Enos and the other staff that were involved in my recruitment. CMU has great football facilities and many resources that will benefit me academically. CMU is just a perfect fit for me.”
