Boys’ Golfer of the Year
Midland Dow’s Ben Roeder
Ben Roeder, who will be a senior in the fall, won a five-person playoff to claim the Division 1 state championship at Forest Akers Golf Course at Michigan State University. Roeder parred the third playoff hole to earn the title after tying for medalist honors with a 70-71-141. He finished just behind teammate Austin Dieters during the season but moved ahead of Dieters for Player-of-the-Year honors.
Girls’ Tennis Player of the Year
Okemos’ Emily Struble
Add another state championship ring to the finger of Okemos’ Emily Struble, who won her third straight Division 2 state title while earning herself the honor of Sports Scene Girls’ Tennis Player of the Year. Struble defeated Forest Hills Northern’s Claire Aleck 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles finals.
Girls’ Track Athlete of the Year
Frankenmuth’s Angie Ritter
Ritter led the Eagles to the Division 3 state title, serving as captain of the 2014 team. She was named Miss Track and Field by the Michigan Track Coaches Association and now is Sports Scene’s selection for Female Track Athlete of the Year.
In the 100-meter dash this season, Ritter set the MITCA state finals record (:12.34), the school record (:11.94), and the MHSAA state finals record (:11.94). In the 200-meter dash, she added the MITCA state finals record (:25:01) and the MHSAA state finals record (:24.72).
Boys’ Track Athlete of the Year
Grand Blanc’s Grant Fisher
Fisher, a junior, captured state titles in the 1600-meter run, with a time of 4:10.82, and in the 3200-meter run, with a time of 9:07.11, at the Division 1 state championship meet. He also took first place at this month’s Adidas Dream Mile in 4:02.02 and won gold in the mile at the New Balance National Indoor championships. Fisher was recently named the Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year and attended the 12th annual Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year ceremony, which occurred prior to the 2014 ESPY Awards.
