Individuals looking for a fun and inexpensive family event, can, for $5, participate in the first annual Joana’sMiles 5k Trail Run/Walk or 1 mile Fun Run.
Both events will take place at Imerman Memorial Park, Saginaw, Aug. 9, and wind through beautifully wooded and groomed trails along the scenic Tittabawassee River.
All proceeds benefit the Joana D. McKeoun Memorial Scholarship, which is administered by the Saginaw Community Foundation and awarded to a graduating Heritage High School senior each year.
It was established in 2013 in honor and memory of Joana McKeoun, who graduated from Heritage High School in 2010 and passed away on Oct. 4, 2013 after a five-year battle with brain cancer.
“The Heritage and White Pine cross country coaches are excited to organize this event,” Gary Loubert, cross country coach at Heritage High School, said. “Joana loved running cross country (for White Pine and Heritage) and there isn’t a more fitting way to honor her passion for running, but also to pass on her love of education through the scholarship this event supports.”
Registration opens at 8 a.m. on race day.
The one-mile Fun Run starts at 9 a.m. with the 5k Run/Walk following at 9:20 a.m.
“I am happy we were able to keep the entry fee low at only $5 per participant,” Tina Walsh, Johana’s mother, said. “This will be a no frills event, but we will provide an accurately measured course and an award for the overall male and female winners. There will also be race shirts for sale for $10 each, and Joana’s two youngest siblings will host a lemonade stand and bake sale. This will be a very inexpensive and fun family event you don’t want to miss.”
