Detroit Catholic Central made it three straight state championships in Division 1 with a 34-19 victory over Davison in the state team finals on Saturday at Battle Creek’s Kellogg Arena.
Catholic Central, which has won the title four of the last five seasons, also beat Davison 29-26 in last seasons tourney.
Catholic Central, which ended the season at 18-4, started out with a 9-0 lead. Jimmy Russell beat Dakota Powers 7-1 at 285 pounds and Aaron Rehfeldt pinned Jacob Alvarez in 131 at 103. Davison won at 112 with Max Johnson getting a decision over Parker O’Brien 4-0. Trevor Zdebski won for Catholic Central 9-1 at 119 for a 13-3 lead.
But Davison won the next four matches to take a 19-13 lead. Lincoln Olson decisioned Evan Toth 13-5 at 125, Derek Humphrey defeated Greg Johnson 9-4 at 130. Mathew Miller at 135 decisioned Eli Joseph 3-0 and Justin Oliver pinned Ryan O’Connor in 1:07 at 140.
But Catholic Central enjoyed victories in the final six matches to finish with the win. At 145, it was Myles Amne defeating Dominic Russ 6-4, at 152 it was Malik Amne over Brenden McRill 5-3, at 160 Nick Bennett pinned Jacob Robart in 1:40, at 171 it was Tyler Morland edging Thomas Gartly 9-5, at 189 Drew Garcia edged Jordan Cooks 3-1 in overtime and at 215, Nick Giese beat Jake Ellis 4-1.
Catholic Central has won three straight state titles and four of the last five. They also beat Davison 29-26 last season.
Davison won the state title in 2000 and from 2002 to 2006 under coach Roy Hall.
Catholic Central is 18-4 while Davison is 25-5.
