The Clare Varsity Wrestling team defeated Laingsburg 39-36 in non-league action Wednesday.
At 285, Bob Green pinned his opponent in the first period to put Clare on the board, 6-0. Clare voided at 103 and then picked up 12 points from voids at 112 and 119 for Bridget Wade and Alyssa Boberg. Michael Evers won 18-15 to put Clare on top 21-6. A loss for Clare by pin at 130, and giving up voids at 135 and 140, Laingsburg pulled back into the lead 24-21. Zach Betzer at 152, Logan Emery at 160, and Brandon Ayris at 171 all pinned their opponents to give Clare the lead, 39-27. Freshmen Hart Smalley wrestled a tough match but lost by decision at 189 to move the score 39-30. Junior Brenden Hensley wrestled an outstanding match at 215 against the returning state runner up, which eventually ended in a pin.
But Clare hung for the win.
