It was another competitive season for the Morley Stanwood volleyball team.
With a 9-0 Central State Activities Association record, the Mohawks won the conference title for the 11th straight season. They were led by first-team all-CSAA selections Kayla Rosman, Mekayla Carey, and Lindsey Veersma.
A highlight of the season came when the Mohawks defeated St. Louis in the district final on the Sharks’ home floor. The Sharks were considered possible state contenders.
The Mohawks (41-10-1) posted a 19-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-23 victory over the Sharks for the district title. In the win, Carey had two aces, three blocks, 17 kills, and 19 digs for the Mohawks; while Rosman had five aces and 21 kills; Lindsey Veersma netted seven kills and 36 assists; Jennie Kizer posted 18 digs; and Heather Hart added 16 digs.
The Mohawks had high hopes in the regionals, which were held in their home gym. They opened with a 25-15, 25-13, 25-15 win over White Cloud. It was Carey and Rosman again leading the way. Carey had 12 kills, eight digs, and three blocks; and Rosman had 12 kills and eight digs. But in the regional final, the Mohawks could not outlast Covenant Christian in a very competitive match and lost 20-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-23.
Carey led the Mohawks with 22 kills, 12 digs, three blocks, and three aces, while Rosman had 15 kills and 20 digs.
Morley Stanwood, the 2011 state champion, ended the season at 42-11-1.
