After just nine wins in the regular season, the Heritage soccer team came together in the postseason. The Hawks topped Midland and Midland Dow in the first two rounds of districts before falling to Traverse City West in the championship game.
“The guys were a very talented group that struggled with playing to our potential all season,” head coach Michelle Noble said of the 11-6-6 team. “During the last regular season game of the season, something seemed to click. We unfortunately lost in a battle and a shoot-out against T.C. West, but we peaked at the right time but have some thoughts of unfinished business linger.”
As for what hindered the team’s success earlier in the year, the coach felt it was because a few players needed to let go.
“Some of the guys were resistant to the plan and what they had to contribute in order for us to be successful, because everyone has a role,” Noble said. “Once they bought into hard work and realizing we need to play as one unit, things began to change.”
The coach pointed to several players as reasons for their late season surge, including 20-plus goal scorer Connor Flynn, Jake Lopez, Riley Cavenaugh, AJ Williams, Trevor Swartz, and Noah Troxell.
“Very difficult [to have season end], but this season I knew we had it in us to go farther than what we did,” Noble said “I was very happy with how we played in districts. Hopefully it lights a fire for us next season.
“I’m encouraged, even though we will be graduating 10 seniors and some very talented players,” Noble added. “I hope the guys realize what hard work can get you and live it out. I’m confident we have learned from this season and will use it as a learning tool for what’s to come.”
