Rockford ended its regular boys soccer season last week with a 2-2 tie against East Kentwood prior to entering district action this week.
Rockford had a strong second half and tied the game midway in the half on a goal by defenseman Jayden Heyer.
It was 2-1, Falcons at halftime.
Ironically, what would be the tying goal was Heyer’s first score of the season.
“It was a corner, I headed the ball, it deflected back to me and I took a touch to the right and put it back over the goalie,” he said. “I usually get in for corners.”
The Falcons are 12-3-4 overall and 7-2-1 in the league while Rockford is 15-6-1 and 6-3-1.
Kentwood built a 2-0 lead.
Jason Lenon broke free with a pass and scored with 11:17 to play in the first half to make it 2-1.
With 18:22 to play, on the corner kick, Heyer got control of the loose ball and fired it into the net for a 2-2 tie.
“It was definitely a good step forward in momentum,” Heyer said. “To be down 2-0 and come back and tie it definitely makes us feel better about the way we’re playing.”
“To come back from 2-0 against a caliber of team like Kentwood, I’ve never been prouder in my six years as Rockford coach,” Thomas said.
