The Flint Powers boy’s golf team was in top form May 30 as it captured the Division 3 district tournament at The Timbers.
The Chargers finished in first place, 19 strokes ahead of second-place Frankenmuth, with a team score of 316. Frankenmuth totaled a 335 followed by Essexville-Garber (3rd, 337), Caro (4th, 348), Birch Run (5th, 362) and Bad Axe (6th, 391). The top six teams at the district quailed for this week’s regional tournament.
Powers was paced by senior Graham Fulcher who shared medalist honors with a 75. Senior Jake Stone placed fifth with a 79, senior Alec Cramer was sixth with an 80 and junior Troy Tomczak finished ninth with an 82.
Second-place Frankenmuth was led by junior Nate Maroun who finished fourth with a 78. Senior Joel Warnemuende was sixth with an 80 while senior Chris List shot an 87 and senior Mitchell Leach a 90.
Essexville Garber was paced by senior Zach Brewer who also shared medalist honors with a 75. Senior Seth Studer finished third overall with a 76. Junior Bryce Vanderbelt was third for Garber with a 92.
Birch Run was paced by senior Dalton Vollmer who finished 10th overall with an 84. Sophomore Eric Jimenez was 13th with an 88 while senior Jeff Karaba added a 94.
A number of area golfers also qualified as individuals for this week’s regional including Fredrick Garcia of Saginaw with an 89, Stephen Garcia of Saginaw with a 90 and Chase Langenburg of Vassar with a 95.
